Suicide
« on: February 14, 2008, 01:56:01 AM »

I've been toying with the idea of making a source mod. Mostly predicated on the idea that most of my joy in shooters is found in finding fantastic ways of killing myself. Elaborate, rube-goldbergesque ways, in some cases. And what could make that more fun than a bunch of other people out to kill themselves and thwart each other in their attempts.

I can see this as being a very simple mod: you gain points for each point of damage done to yourself, lose them for each point of damage done to others, and gain for every point of damage you heal on someone else. The artistry would be in making maps that necessitate self-destructive creativity. Ones where a single grenade spawn point is prized because you could pop yourself pretty well with it. But also where a single douche with a gravity gun could snatch it from under your feet and whallop himself at your expense. Environmental hazards could be doubleplus awesome, but you'd have to avoid a situation where everyone just rushes to a pond and drowns themselves.

It seems even more appropriate given the absolute fucking suicidal bleakness of HL2's environments and characters. Hell, have it play the opening bars of the MASH theme whenever you finally succeed in killing yourself.

Fair idea?

Shades of 5 Minutes to Kill (Yourself) with multiplayer & responsive controls?

A Labyrinth of Crete level meant to emulate the Tower of Babel could produce contained carnage, a goal towards the top (pit), and a nice view on the anarchy below.

Well, to be fair, if we really need a proper, literal Suicide thread, it'd be much more at home in Slacking Off, Better Off, Putting Off, or ideally, Jerking Off. Sure, it would also fit in Showing Off, but nobody's ever that honest about it.

Mentioning all those "offs" makes me wonder why there's no "Ministry of Fucking Off"

Or is that somehow worked into what banned people see?

I like it.

My worry over the title of this thread was not alleviated when the first few words were "I've been toying with the idea".

Don't discount the fun in trying to kill other people in ridiculous ways.  I spent equal amounts of time both trying to get Max Payne to blow himself through a window, down the fire escape and headfirst onto the pavement, and trying to get one of the MGS2 guards to look at a magazine, catch a C4 blast in the face, get flipped backwards over the guardrail and do a half-gainer into the ocean.  Neither endeavor succeeded, but they did make people wonder about me.

 :hurr:

Although, I guess the idea of inventive cruelty towards others has been thoroughly explored.  My question is, do you actually ever die or are you just practically immortal and masochistic?

Tangent: I've always wanted to see an IF game reward you for finding all the unique ways to get offed, since I tend to spend more time doing this than legitimately trying to figure out the puzzles.  The Hitchhiker's game was absolutely wonderful for it; there were like a dozen Easter eggs that happened to terminate you, and if you got bored you could beat yourself to death with any item in the game - including towels, pocket fluff and even your utter lack of tea.

Aisle and its spiritual predecessor Pick Up The Phone Booth and Aisle do exactly that.

Well I meant much more in the sense of 5 Minutes to Kill (Yourself).  In general you can get much more creative with text than lego-blocky sprites.  Hell, the suicides could be puzzles themselves.

There are a few ways to go about this, and they could potentially be featured in the same game as different round types.

One idea is that you give everybody enormous health, and then, the first person to die wins the round.

Another is that you give everybody infinite health and put them on a timer, then whoever took the most damage when the timer runs out wins the round.

Yet a third is that you give people relatively normal health, and then declare that the last man alive loses.

Fill a Garry's Mod map with dangerous toys, assign those objectives, and you've got yourself a game.

Anecdote: I was on a Day of Defeat server in which the local admins turned cheats on and all lay prone with the MG and noclip-flew around the map, murdering everybody.  They went as far as to move everybody else to the Allies.  Most players got frustrated and left, but I took to pulling the pin on my grenade and running from them in an attempt to kill myself before they could.  This resulted in one hilarious incident in which I spawned, pulled the pin on my grenade, and was teleported to an area where several admins were crouched in a circle and mowed me down.  I died, dropping the grenade and killing the admins.

Just food for thought.

A gauntlet of impossible odds?

:rage: Sign me up!

Conversely, that scenario brings to mind another play mode, in which a team of players must kill a single other player with insanely high health. The team would consist of one or two shot kill drones, and respawn accordingly. The objective for the high health player would be to reach the end checkpoint.

This has likely been done many times before, yes?

Won't be able to check it out until I get home, but IndieGames.com posted a link to a game called Karoshi, describe as "a mix between a puzzle and a platformer ... all about getting yourself killed."

It then goes on to site "I Wanna Be the Guy" as an influence.

Karoshi's a pretty cute little puzzle game. Not all that funny, but shades of I Wanna Be The Guy are more than apparent. Especially the way the little guy esplodes when he dies.

Indeed it was.  Though level 12 was just retarded.  You don't add extra keyboard commands out of nowhere.

Aside from 12, I thought the biggest problem with the game was that it would introduce a gimmick or nuance for one stage and then promptly never use it again. Like the death by electricity stage, or the solution to level 24.

Personally, I thought the one-minute level was crap.
