I co-own it with my brother, and since he needs it to work and I'm poor, we've pretty much always had an agreement that when either of us moves out he'll buy my half.

Search continues.  Had a nice offer from a coworker's brother who needed to get out of a lease; it was a nice, big place and he was offering to help with the rent, but it's in Chandler and I ultimately opted to stay in Tempe.  My grandmother's pushing pretty hard for me to move into the house nextdoor to her (which she owns); frankly that would feel a little like moving back in with them but it's a gorgeous house and she's offering me a great deal on it.

Still looking at apartments.  My #1 pick doesn't have any 2-bed 1-bath rooms on the ground floor at the moment; there's a 2-bed 2-bath, but since I'd be living alone the second bathroom is pretty much just wasted space and a wasted $50 a month, and also it's not really ground level but slightly underground, thus having the major drawbacks of a ground-level apartment (bugs, target for break-ins) without the major benefit (hauling your shit in without having to take the stairs).

I checked the reviews on my #2 pick and holy shit it has apparently gone to hell just in the month since I checked it out: there are like 5 new reviews all talking about multiple recent crimes there where the police have been called.  Burglary, domestic disturbances, drug deals...well, I guess for the kind of deals they're offering, they were bound to attract low-income people, some of whom are bound to be criminals.

Frankly that house next to my grandparents is sounding like a better deal all the time.

Can you/her rent any rooms/space in your grandmothers house for extra dough?* Because if so, you have a hands-down winner.

*This assumes you only allow someone you trust into such a position and only if the right tenant comes along. So it's more of a very strong bonus than straight-up extra income for you/your grandmother. Also, this assumes that your grandmother is offering a whole house, where you were otherwise looking for only an apartment.

If I can find a roommate I'd just as soon stay where I am.  If I move out I intend to live alone.

haha, I'm in the same boat.  I think I found an a good place for me and a full house of furniture, my cat, and nothing else that moves.  Can't wait to have my own space again.

Finally settled on a place.  It's owned by my grandparents but is not right nextdoor to them, so that's a pretty good deal.  It's not as nice as the house nextdoor to them, which they just renovated the hell out of, but it's in a great location, right next to a park and also 2 miles closer to work and girlfriend (but 2 miles farther from where I buy comics, beer, and coffee -- though still in biking distance, once it is no longer 110 out and I no longer have pneumonia and can actually think about biking without getting winded).

Actually the fact that it's not as nice as the house nextdoor is a benefit to them; they got the house nextdoor rented, but the backyard on this one is dead and it's going to take 2 months' work before it's in any condition to rent to someone they're not related to.  So, the money they're losing by renting it to me at a discount is mitigated by the money they're not losing by having someone move in now rather than keeping it vacant for two months.
