Well, here's the most obvious link.

I've never tried this sorta thing, but mostly it's just fucking around in a 3d model maker, like Blender until you know what you're doing, as it's rather hard to teach such a thing over the internet.

It's actually pretty easy, Niku.

1) Figure out how the fuck to move around in Blender or whichever.  Do the tutorials.  Okay.
2) Get references for whatever you're trying to model.  Ideally you want a straight on front and straight on side.  Top/bottom and back helps a lot too obviously.
3) Trace.  Just throw a 2D wireframe around the side view, then rotate and do another 2D wireframe around the front, and repeat for as many angles as you can get references for.
4) Connect.  If they're not already, place the frames you made so that they're orbiting around a single axis (so the front and side forms a cross, etc).
5) Form polygons from the points you have.  You should have a recognizable if probably pointed and flat-in-the-middle object by now.
6) Adjust the proportions so that they look normal.
7) If you're not worried about polycount, subsurface the shit out of that bitch.  Subsurfacing is the 3d equivalent of Flash's paintbrush tool, a magical technique that makes even your amateur mistakes look intentional and awesome.  If you ARE worried about polycount, then subsurface to get a feel of what it ought to look like and then go strategically add/adjust polys by hand.
8) Add textures.  I'm not terribly good at this part but it should be no more complicated than grabbing bits off of your reference pic and wrapping them around the mesh.
9) Ask someone who has actually done this more than once before for better instructions.
10) ???
