See, I love TA for this.  Every time I get the urge to actually give ChO a shot, all I have to do is look in my buffer window in #urbanvigilante.  TA's always got something that kicks my urge in the dick.

Thanks for suffering for me, TA.

You've made a terrible mistake, Dooly.

He shouldn't have feet.

I couldn't make his feet tiny without making his legs tiny.

I did make sure to throw in everything that looked like pouches, though.

Other than, "it's no longer beta", what would they say?

Well, they've been saying that their datamined rate of gain at high levels was too high, which is demonstrably a lie because the 30-40 zones are locked and inaccessible during the open beta.  They've been saying that they want people to be the same level as Black Talon when they fight him at the end of the tutorial without having to mob-grind or do all the optional missions, which is untrue because even before they slashed mission rewards, and mob rewards to less than a tenth in some cases, you'd be barely 4 when he's level 5 if you do that.

Ultimately, they've been saying that two days of datamining on this XP rate, with one of those days being devoted entirely an end-of-beta event involving constant attacks by giant robots, is enough data to be confident that their changes hit the mark.  Which is just absurd.

<chibisede> http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/5851/screenshot2009082220452.jpg  this pretty much sums up the design of ChO
<chibisede> Like, its nice that they give us the option to have a bunch of doors on the side of our buildings, but half of them are half buried in the sidewalk, and the rest you'll need a stepladder to get in to, and only one door works exactly as the devs and players expected.

Monday morning, the patch redid how starting stats are chosen, and what could be chosen.  Monday evening, the open beta ended.  Launch is the beginning of next week.  Goodbye forever, you shitty shitty game.  What few good ideas you had were buried in a mountain of shitty design, shitty design philosophy, and shitty implementation of design.

I just saw a banner ad for the "Defeat your Nemesis who grows as you do!" feature. Was that in Beta? Do you get to design them? Or is everybody fighting the same model 5 models chosen at random from the existing enemy groups in game with randomized names that are bumped up to match your level for pre-set missions?

One of my internet friends actually bought the game, and has been playing it.  She did all the content in the game, which got her to level 38 out of 40, and ground the rest of the way.  Now, she has helped me understand how the top-tier gear works.

As I understand it, the best gear in the game is UNITY gear.  You can't get UNITY gear as drops, nor can you spend game money for it - no, to get UNITY gear, you have to accumulate and spend UNITY merits.  You get UNITY merits by, of course, doing UNITY missions.

Once you're 40, you get invited to the UNITY HQ, and a guy there will give you randomly-generated repeatable missions.  He'll go "Hey, there's a thing here!" and you go there and then you slog through a random instance.  This gives you 1 UNITY merit.  After you've done five of those, he goes "Hey, there's a big thing here!" and gives you a 5-man raid thingy.  You, and up to four others who have also gotten their 5-man raid thingies unlocked, go in there and fight through and win the raid, and each get 1-3 UNITY merits from it.  And that's it for the day.  This can be repeated daily.

So, 6-8 UNITY merits per day.  Okay.  You have 9 gear slots, and the best gear for all of them is UNITY gear, so you want 9 pieces of UNITY gear.  I don't have the exact prices, but UNITY gear costs between 250 and 1000 merits per piece.  Apparently, on average, it will take close to 500 days of doing these random cookie-cutter UNITY things every day to get all your gear.

I will never complain about CoH's merit grind again.

Sounds like a boring and badly-implemented version of WoW's dailies and repgrinds, only with ten times as much grinding. Which is to say, Jack Emmert probably designed the game.

I have the game. I play the game. I enjoy the game for all the wrong reasons. Here's a quick summary of things I notice constantly while playing:

The crafting system is garbage.
There's insanely little endgame from what I've seen so far.
There's only one 'story line', meaning, no matter what type of characters you role, every character, every time (save from levels 6-10 or so) will do all the exact same missions.
There are lots of glitches that range from 'awesome' to 'I will rape a fetus'.
If you die while fighting anything less then a mob or super villain three levels or more higher, you are universally seen as a chump.
The game tells you absolutely nothing about what you're doing past the basics, and there's no resource online that can really help you out (hopefully this one will be remedied.

That aside, the things I like are also plentiful:

Best character creation system (purely visually) this side of Second Life.
Good range of powers, and no restraints on what you can choose.
Fighting is actually pretty fun.
Mission types seem to be varied. They change enough to make you feel like it's not the same type of quest you just did.
Great physics and really fun strategies based on that.
Seriously. I froze a guy in place, and when he used his shock wave attack to break free he detonated missile props that were behind him and killed himself.
Really, the environment matters and powers can be used for more than their face value.

Now, as much as I want to say everyone should play this game, they really shouldn't. This game does things I've been asking for for years, unfortunately, they seemed to spend so much time thinking of fun things to put in to their MMO, they forgot to actually make the MMO.

Someone ground to level cap without ever leaving the tutorial zone.

More amazing is that they did it with such a terrible UI.
