And it helps keep the game from either being just the sounds of gun fire and explosions while also not making it seem like just generic taunts like Unreal Tournament.

They developed the dynamic conversation system as part of Half-Life 2; the conditions system is apparently so easy to script that they can have the writers do it rather than needing to bring out the programmers. I think that NPC allies make use of it in HL2, but it really gets put through its paces in Left 4 Dead, which shows you just how robust it is.

There was a lot of effort put into it up-front, but the end result is that they have an easier time than anyone else of putting in dynamic lines. I think I heard about this in either the L4D or TF2 commentary.

Did you know that every class in TF2 has a distinctive silhouette?

Repetition of commentary nodes aside, the point he's trying to make is that adding voice samples to TF2 is no harder than getting the guy to record it and then dumping that file into a conditional group.  It's not even as complicated as they try and make it sound, but the execution is so nice that you can't really fault them for being proud.

I forget where and when I said it but somebody once made a very compelling argument that one of the things that makes TF2 an actually tolerable online experience is the fact that the large array of built-in taunts, voice clips and killcams really cuts down on the overall level of immaturity on display.  Or in other words, an 11-year-old kid's not going to be as tempted to shout "FAG!" into the microphone every time he kills someone if his character is already saying something much more entertaining about how the fag in question also lives in a camper van.

My favorite is "You are a loose cannon, Sandvich, but you are a damn good cop!" but I also like "Your sandvich couldn't save you this time, fatty!" and the Scout's weird giggle thing.
