Arena!
« on: December 26, 2009, 10:10:51 AM »

Me and Wiseman are running a 2s and a 3s together with a long-time bubbly Southern Belle friend. Prot Warrior/Unholy Death Knight and Prot Warrior/Disc Priest/Unholy Death Knight.

We are only just now clowing our way past the 1200s or so. The only real shake-up aside from our beginner's pains to learn each other and the comps is that I started as Arms and swapped to Prot for the fuck of it and we went from winning 1/3 of our games to 2/3 of them. Our weekly Comedy 2s for 10 went 8 and 2. I hear Prot is grossly overpowered if you have access to wild amounts of PvE gear, but I think I'm making due with a 232, 2.6 Rogue Mace, a 219 Shield and 1100 Resilience worth of Furious.

I am slightly baffled at the notion of willingly farming honor as I gain access to Relentless off-pieces.

So this is a thread about Arena. Hi, Hey, Hello.

Hey, look, our own forum.

Farming honor, you mean going into BG's and rofl-stomping people as prot. as you carry a flag? Oh man, the fucking pains you must have.  :wat:

I was trying to get my rogue into binge heroics so I can get him Furious geared and go into arena in lieu of the death knight, since any cleanse team tends to neuter our damage. (I.E. me).

I more mean going to Strand of the Ancients and dying(and losing) to ennui, but I guess I should realize that forcing myself to go to terrible BGs just to get "For Great Honor" is probably inefficient compared to winning Wintergrasp 4 times a day. But... Call to Arms gives 25 arena points a day. What a quzybuk.

Also I think only Paladins bother us in that regard because Priests/Shamans don't have Aura Mastery and a Bubble.

My understanding re: mages in arena is the hardest part is actually getting full casts off.  Rogue partners work well; Frost damage is still too low to burst somebody without assistance and Arcane is too susceptible to pressure to play defensively.

If you really want to learn to arena, find some interested friends, try to cobble together something that complements well and start losing a lot of games.

As far as I can tell Frost Mage revolves around throwing out Nova and Polymorph to the point where you can Mirror Image/Elemental and shit all over a guy when he's truly boned. Also knowing when to blink and how to get just far away enough to pop a clutch Glyphed Evocation.

Frost is pretty low on the burst as Sir Bird says but the unrivaled control is why you went Frost in the first place. That Mirror/Elemental firing squad made me cry when I was bad Arms.

Alternatively, go Arcane and go retardo all-dps with a friend. This is not a bad way to generate "free" points from 10 games a week in 2s. Or any bracket really, but it works best in 2s. All you have to do is coordinate with your friend which visible target to WoTLK first. (WoTLK = The name of the expansion, or to retardo burst/aoe something down.)

Note that Arena is easier to get into than it looks. Unless you are entirely unhelpable, you will get better by sheer experience and you will get better tiers of gear as early as 800 rating. And you can't lose rating until you're close to 1000, so.

It's something like Deadly for Honor, 800-1350(Furious), Triumphs(Furious) and from 1250 you can buy Relentless off-pieces for Honor. Weapons are 1800. A win before 1200 will put you 40 points higher.

Like when me and Wiseman tried retardo double DPS with me as Prot and won 8 times that week, we went from 800 to 1200 easy. I grabbed Furious legs on Tuesday.

Arcane PvP is hilarious if you've got the snuff for it, as I've two shot PvP geared people in PvE gear in BGs. My spec is on my armory, my PvP gear is horribly gemmed and enchanted now (A fried told me to gem haste, gemming for resi is useless as a mage as you get enough resi from raw gear)

trying to see if I can sit at the honor cap + WG Quests + Commendations until the next season drops and set up some upgrades early.

If you're going from scratch, wait until your faction has wintergrasp and then hit instances as hard as possible.  Spend triumphs on furious and SK Shards on Honor, and then offset pieces.

Haste is, by my understanding, a good choice for mages since again, your biggest challenge will be to get a full cast off.

I occasionally run into an arcane mage and think "OH THANK GOD I DON'T HAVE TO DEAL WITH INFINITY ROOT" and then I am dead somehow, so.

Generally though, you want to go with infinity root. (AND MS LITE?????????????????)

So after weeks of analysis I am at a loss as to what to replace this guy with. Naturally as a gnome one trinket slot is going to be Le Medallion but yeah.

Should a Mage look at the Battlemaster trinkets?

Buying a Corroded Skeleton Key for Mage PvP would make you a total asshole, but it would also make you my hero~

I really can't stand arenas. I used to be very in to PVP, and very good at it as well, but I just can't wrap my head around what's fun about Arena.

In theory, Arena is a really cool extension of dueling, or getting the absolute most of your class to specifically counter people, where second-by-second decisions can make or break a game.

In practice, these moments of lucid glory are sandwiched between facerolling or being facerolled.

I liked leading large groups into battle, yes. Skirmishes in that game, particularly now, allow for each played to make a definite difference in the course of the fight. Unless they're a Magus.

T: Doom. I hate dueling as well.
