I've made a point of not actually canceling my existing health plan until I see something come out of my paycheck, even though I've gotten my ID card from Kaiser twice now (the second one I assume for the 2011 elections that kicked in the exact same day as my new hire elections.)

Has anyone here (you know, the working class) ever worked a job where it took less than 90 days for insurance coverage to start? I know I sure as fuck haven't.

Me neither.  Inasmuch as I've been in the same temp position for two years (the longest I've ever had the same job, incidentally), I'm lucky to have insurance at all.  It's not very GOOD insurance, but it helped me eventually get to the point where I can breathe comfortably most days.

the suspicious thing about privilege is that once you see it somewhere you start seeing it everywhere

Indeed, and I'd say that's a real weakness to Republican and Libertarian ideology -- "I'm doing fine, and if anybody else isn't it must be their own damn fault."

Obviously that's an oversimplification, and just as obviously fiscal liberals aren't immune.  But I think it's a common enough pattern to make a note of.

That's because white people are everywhere.

Washington's Republican senatorial candidate this season was a pretty picture-perfect example of that.  At least half of his campaign ads involved pointing out that he put himself through college working as a janitor so who needs social programs.

What's that you say, the employment situation is worse and living costs, let alone EDUCATION COSTS have gone through the roof?  Nonsense!  I put myself through college working as a JANITOR.

As a legal citizen I am almost certainly unqualified for any kind of sanitorial vocation

Damnit, beaten to the "Republicans want to crack down on illegal immigration so a new generation of hardworking Americans can pay their way through college by working as janitors" joke!

It certainly represents the sound internal logic based on false premises I've come to expect from the GOP and other paranoid schizophrenics.
