Some games just abstract it by having your stachecharisma score affect the pricing.

The haggling system in general bugs me because that's not the way item shops in RPGs work.

I'm trying to figure out how serious you are about this, because if Recettear were legitimately trying to replicate the traditional item shop experience, I can't tell that you'd ever actually do anything. I mean, I guess I could see a game where determining inventory and standard pricing is the meat of the experience, but under that model you'd never actually "run" the store; you'd be more like an owner who comes by every day to pick up the profits and announce new changes in policy. I guess I just don't see the problem with a parodical concept that expands on the original premise in order to make a game that's more than a throw-away joke.

I'd actually be okay with that!  I'm not big on the minutiae of merchandising.  I don't want or need to have my hands in every sale - just have some dumb clerk over there hock my shit for actual profit while I go dungeon crawling for more shit to hock, and occasionally redesign or rearrange my little store.

This is of course essentially the Auction House in WoW, so fuckit.  I'm not going to say much more as I realize most people don't find price-guessing as terminally dull as I do.  Hell, there's even a game show about it.

At high merchant levels you can buy vending machines which are essentially what you want: You feed them full of items and then people buy them automatically.

I like this game because it has the roguelike thrill of consequence, with extra weight because if I fail in a dungeon, not only do lose the dungeon game, but I am also handicapped in the shop game. And it has decisions. I crafted a Power Glove +3 the other day; at first I intended to keep it for the martial artist, but the guy is dirt poor, and the dumb rich girl came to buy it before he did and I got her to pay like 15k extra. It was a tough call, because the dude is still running around with a plain store-bought Sturdy Glove.

Also it kinda feels like a real-time Torneko no Daibouken with actual out-of-dungeon gameplay, and that tickles all sorts of joy cells in my brain.

Is anyone else having issues with the game crashing? Like, it won't even start, just crashes immediately as soon as I try to play it from Steam.

You'll get to love the art bitch if you make it to endless mode, since she sells rare stuff, and at that point you can afford the 200+% markup she demands. Prime is the real pain in the ass, since she almost always haggles even on prices she would agree on; if your price is sensible and you're willing to forfeit your combo, stick to your guns and she'll probably accept it after a few tries, otherwise just cut her a ridiculously good deal and eat the loss. Housewives are tremendously reasonable in comparison.

After playing a good long while, what strikes me the most about this game is that the dungeons don't get really interesting until the endgame. The first three dungeons are so easy they might as well be tutorials, but the way the last two mix and match enemy types and special floor effects makes for some really compelling gaming, especially with the variety of adventurers who all have fairly unique playings styles. Right now I'm about halfway through the Crystal Nightmare with every character unlocked, and it gets so intense that I can't help but wish the game didn't take so long to take the kid gloves off.

Did anyone else have the problem of no character being worth a damn except the first swordsman guy?  Thief lady and mage just died pretty much instantly.

Hell no, not me. The thing is, Louie has exactly three strong points: his wide attack range, his shield, and the best (or second best, not sure about [spoiler]Arma's[/spoiler] yet) defense stat in the game, taking into account his armor choices. Conversely, Charme (thief) and Caillou (mage) are two of the most fragile, and they start with garbage equipment whereas you've probably upgraded Louie a bit already just to unlock them. You can't play them the same way.

Charme is a lot more dependant on player skill, but her ceiling is much higher than Louie's, and her mobility and speed alone are worth the effort of learning to use her. She has the best dash in the game by far, allowing her to sneak around monsters for easy side and back attacks, or outrun pretty much anything, and her parry can block almost any attack, melee or ranged, physical or magical, making it even better than Louie's shield if you can pull it off. Her flame dash doesn't do a lot of damage but is invincible all the way through and is a great panic button.

Caillou's slow but he's a walking armageddon, very much an "offense is the best defense" character. Sparkburst is ridiculously effective, to the point where he's easily the best character for boss rushes. The key is to not be stingy with his magic. He's got a lot of SP and recharges it with his basic attacks (both melee and charged), so you can bonk slimes, bunnies and skeletons with your cane and pretty much vaporize everything else with Sparkburst. The fire blast is situational but good when you're mobbed, and it's a sphere AOE so it can hit flying enemies. And the ice mine is good against the knights because it can hit them in the back. Later on he gets homing fireballs and a random teleport spell, both of which are spectacularly useful in some circumstances.

Arma has a much better defense stat.

Charme's honestly phenomenal, you have to learn how to use her dodge move. If you can avoid hits, you'll kill things twice as fast and most bosses aren't a problem. She's easily the best all around character you have prior to getting Griff, who has everything Charme has, plus the widest attack range in the game and a special ability that trivializes every boss fight. Arma's better than everybody with the right weapons equipped, but has an extremely high learning curve, is painfully slow, and you don't get her until you get the true ending, and by then you're done with the game anyway, for the most part. You also have to level her up from like level 6 if you want to use her in the bonus dungeon, and zzzz.

Dude the art bitch is amazing when she brings you shit other than wallpaper. You have to pay something like 255% to actually get her to sell, but some of the items she has are either rare drops in the last dungeon or can only be purchased from her.
