wikipedia confirms, but it was apparently changed to psp really early, like 2008.

competent Star Ocean ports

I've been playing a bit of the SO remake but it's...well, like you say, merely competent.  Generic characters, plot has yet to become engaging, battle system seems interesting but has too many little fiddly bits, and the overworld is gorgeous but has slowdown like a motherfucker.

Weak source material.  SO2 fares better, because the basic game's a massive improvement.

Star Ocean 2 also has one of the coolest Disc 1 bombs that you can make with a little patience and a lot of save scumming.

You can get a one-of-a-kind sword after the obligatory fighting tournament scenario.  You need to use the mage to synthesize 2 chunks Mythril (I think that's the material.  It's one of the hardest to get, and takes a maxed out Alchemy skill), then have Claude Customize the sword successfully twice with the mythril.  The resulting sword can carry you through most of the rest of the game, save for the bonus dungeon by virtue of its attack power alone, but it also spews little stars whenever you hit an enemy with it that hit for even more damage.

You actually can't synth mithril that early because doing so requires an item you can't buy until the second disc. How you're supposed to do it is save up some skill points, save, then buy up the "radar" skill, which gives you a random item for each level you buy and can include rare minerals like mithril and moonite. Reload and repeat until you get your mithril.
