Whoa, wait, what? Someone is misquoting MLK?

Yes, even I did it. The problem is, its actually kind of a MLK quote, but someone stuck their own little bit on the front of it. Still don't really care personally, the message is the same to all of the "FUCK YEAH TAKE THAT TERRORISM" people I see on face book and want to punch directly in the fucking face.

This explains the misquote.

Wow, you know what. Fuck that. I just found the actual MLK quote and its a damn sight more powerful in my opinion. I mean, MLK was one of the best public speakers ever, so I'm not surprised that something he actually wrote was a lot better than something people THINK he wrote.

Quote from: MLK for reals this time
"Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction."

I understand that self-righteous jingoism is irritating, and I'm as pacifistic as the next tree-hugging commie, but I'm having a pretty hard time feeling sad about this asshole. This isn't fucking Fable, where you get to kill as many non-named enemy soldiers as you like and be a hero but then when you get to the boss you have to spare his life or you get darkside points. I mean, preach on, but the point is that this is just five more dead people in an obscene war that has already cost the lives of thousands, and at least in this case we know for sure that at least one of the victims was kind of a douchebag.

The real tragedy is that people honestly think this will change anything ever.

WARNING: there is a video circulating around Facebook of a BBC video of the killing of Osama Bin Laden, supposedly made by US troops. It is a Virus!!!!! Spread the news because it's circulating fast!

People really want their snuff films of the guy dying, that's for sure.

That logic still assumes that we are obliged to do the things we've done.

Don't be silly.

We're obliged to slowly let things get worse, until we have another gigantic blow up, like we always do every hundred years or so (a little while after we lose the last living memory of the previous big blowup). Then people become interested in actually getting shit done again.

Oh what fun we're going to have when we're too old to do much but suffer.

You know, I'd like to rise above violence and say the killing of Osama bin Laden was unfortunate, and for the most part I do, until I'm reminded that when the pressure was on he showed his character by using one of his wives as a human shield.

Fuck that guy.  Seriously.  Fuck.  That.  Guy.  And good God damned riddance.

I did think that was a suitably cowardly way for him to go.

That didn't actually happen

I'm not really going to defend the character of Osama bin Laden. I'm the most peacenik, anti-violent hippy on the boards right now, but I'd never defend the man. Just, you know, I'm all about holding people responsible for the things they actually did, not made up stuff.

That said, as I've made clear, this isn't really something I could ever see myself pumping my fist, beating my chest and celebrating about. Yeah, the man was evil, but he used to work for us. His actions, the events of 9/11, the bombings years early at the World Trade center, those were motivated by the imperialist strategies of the US. The same ones we're carrying out right now. The same ones that have led to countless lives lost overseas. I won't revel in the man's death, or any man's death, and what he did is indefensible. But the attitudes I've seen from a lot of people cheering the administration on only encourage more war, more bloodshed.

Sanctimonious disapproval of people enjoying bin Laden's death has been pretty popular in the ol' twitter feed lately.  I wasn't personally getting out the party hats when I heard he was dead but I don't see it as a big deal that anyone was.  (I did love the tide of jokes that poured in, it was like people had been storing them up for that whole decade.)  It's built into every human brain to enjoy death, and this might be the one guilt-free chance everybody gets to cheer death on.  By all means rise above baser instincts when it's relevant to do so, but there's no slippery slope argument or anything here, I don't think.  Nobody who went to a bin Laden death party is going to start watching NASCAR to get their next fix, and if there's one case in the WORLD where I'm not anti-death penalty it's this one.

You might have heard this one already, but the codename that they were using for bin Laden was "Geronimo".

This did not happen under the Texan.

There hasn't been a Texan in the Oval Office since the 60s.

There comes a point past "trying too hard" where you just give the title to someone out of pity.

I don't think anyone's arguing that we should be sad about bin Laden.  I do, however, stop short of celebration or rejoicing.  But on the other hand, I'm not going to tell anyone in New York or DC that they shouldn't be dancing in the streets, because I have no right to tell them how to feel.

I'm fairly middle o' the road neutral when it comes to hyping up bad dudes dying. I'll admit, I'm a smidge bit pleased with Osama being gone but I'm not overly celebrating it like so many people. Like DAMN, most people everywhere are hooting and hollering and throwing confetti! I think it's kinda messed up essentially celebrating a person's death, but kinda like Thad said, that's their thing y'know? It's quite a spectacle to watch, though! History in the making, we'll all remember this tidal wave of ecstatically enthused death praising.

I can understand the celebration at Ground Zero. For a lot of people in New York Bin Laden was the symbol of 9/11 and all the trauma they might have associated with that event.

For me, I just feel like the world is probably a better place without Osama Bin Laden. I'm not celebrating or anything, but fuck that guy.

Pretty sure my boss just leaned over and saw the title of this thread.  Don't know what THAT means.

Anyway as much as I hate to encourage Constantine's constant scaring-people-the-fuck-away-from-the-left he is right about the original narrative of the operation not matching up to the reality, shock, gasp.  Emerging details are making this seem less like a heroic assault against the Cobra compound and more like a bunch of soldiers dropping in on a guy's house and shooting everyone up.

Oh man, so, funny story. Apparently the choppers they few in on are actually some kind of hyper-secret STEALTH CHOPPERS (likely heavily modified Blackhawks, but possibly a new design). Anyway, after the one crashed/was shot down/fell over after landing/a wizard did it (take your pic), the forces there blew it up to prevent any secret tech falling into anyone's hands.

Only the tail was intact. And was last seen being dragged off by a random Pakistani guy with a tractor. :glee:
