The Unreal Calvin Debate
« on: November 29, 2012, 04:00:38 AM »

So this came up recently with my friends so because they are tasteless philistines I have decided to turn to you guys, who are of course much more refined and gentlemanly.

Also, SCIENCE.

So the question is simple: of the three recurring imaginary personas Calvin assumes, which is best?

1. Spaceman Spiff
It never fails. I just had this thing waxed and washed.

2. Tracer Bullet
I introduced the dame to a friend very close to my heart. Just a little down and to the left, to be specific.

3. Stupendous Man
S... for Stupendous!

Choose wisely.

Spaceman Spiff had those absolutely gorgeous monster designs and starscapes.  Tracer Bullet was spot on and had the storyline where Calvin got shaved bald and they tried to make do with magic markers.  Revenge of the Baby-sat was the first Calvin and Hobbes collection I bought with my own money.

Tracer Bullet was just so well written and some of the phrases used in those comics are favourites from all of Calvin and Hobbes.

But I got to vote Spaceman Spiff. The art for Spiff was always top notch and those stories just felt more... Calvin? I guess I don't know how to describe it.

I prefer Tracer because of a deep personal love for film noir, but cannot objectively vote for anything but Spaceman Spiff.

Spaceman Spiff is the best because it let Bill Watterson illustrate vast alien landscapes and also because he created Spiff years before Calvin and Hobbes, so his genuine love for the genre shows through.

BTW guys I saw The Complete Calvin and Hobbes selling for $60 at Costco.

...which I'm now seeing is actually a few bucks more than what it's going for on Amazon.  But hey, bet that would make a great Christmas gift for some people.

I don't need it. I've got a well-used collection of the original books.

ALSO: Calvin and Hobbes: The Search Engine, by Michael "Bing" Yingling, is certainly the best search engine ever to be associated with the name "Bing".

Tracer Bullet might've stood a chance if there had been more of him.

Tracer Bullet might've stood a chance if there had been more of him.
See also: the Herman's Head Calvins, which only appeared in like two strips (one about tripping down the stairs and another about dreams). The soap opera-style strips were also a good idea that I would've loved to see more of.

But yeah, Tracer Bullet was really good. Gorgeously stark black and white images backed up by witty one liners. Spaceman Spiff was really good, too, but for some reason I could never get as into it as Tracer Bullet. Stupendous Man I could take or leave honestly (besides, my favorite babysitter storyline is the one where Calvin tricks her into playing Calvinball).

Got the complete collection for my twelve-year-old sister for Christmas almost solely because when I asked my dad if she already had any of the books he told me she was "probably too old for that".

Who tricked who into playing calvinball in that misadventure?

The Babysitter says if Calvin behaves and does his homework, she'll play whatever game he wants, and it takes a few strips for her to realize the rules of Calvinball, at which point she turns it around on him.
The only rule is you make it up as you go along
