To grossly oversimplify things: the instruments in FM synth are produced by creating inharmonic fluctuations in simple waveforms.  Without that inharmony you end up with the same triangle, square and sine waves that make up regular chiptunes.

Basically, the FM synth is simulating a broken NES.

Which is all the more impressive when the glorious Hungarian mofos at Novotrade still manage to make it sing.

I posit that Rocket Knight Adventures had the best soundtrack of the 16 bit era. (Things that used CD Audio don't count.) The variety and breadth that the game's music covers is remarkable. I can't think of another game from the era that had boss battles timed to music in quite the same way. This track is my favorite, but pick anything else from the list it's on and see what I mean. Literally anything else. (Make sure you do it from this user, he's the only one I've found to not have recorded the music from an emulator)

To bring it all back to Phil Collins, I always thought this instrumental break on Invisible Touch sounded like it was done on a Genesis. Even though it didn't claw out my ears or anything.
