how do i laptop
« on: October 04, 2008, 02:01:08 PM »

My laptop's kind of old and a little fucked.  Powers off at random and I'm not sure how much I trust the manufacturer to repair it in full (though I'm still sending it in).  I've been trying to gather information on laptops, to work out which to replace it with.  I would just buy a desktop, but between school, spending 2 nights a week at the girlfriend's, and possibly hauling the thing over to game with friends, it looks like a desktop wouldn't really be practical.

I haven't bought a laptop in a while, and I've got a decent chunk (~2.5-3k?) set aside for a laptop if it'll last me for four years, though I'm kind of considering getting a cheaper machine that'll last 2ish, and then just upgrading to a new one 2 years from then.

The budget's set kind of high because I'd like it to be capable of running games that come out for a while.  I don't have a hard-on for running anything at max res; I'm just aiming to run things well over the span of the next couple years.

While Alienware is painfully priced, the m15x seems (so far) like one the best fit for my needs, if I go for a long-term machine.

I'm open to suggestions.  I've been mostly just googling, referencing notebookcheck and notebookreview.com, and comparing against stuff listed on newegg.

(When buying a laptop, I'm planning on getting the least amount of RAM possible in the build configuration, and then buying RAM from elsewhere.  Cheaper.)

If money's not an object, I'd say go MacBook Pro.  They've got pretty solid video cards and can run Windows.  And if you're going to school, Apple's got about the best educational discount you're going to find.

It depresses me that I've been idly considering this.  I'm not sure when the next wave rolls out, though.

(Not seeing much clear info on the educational discount.  "Up to $200" is the only numeric thing I ran into on their site, so far.)

It still looks like I'd get a lot more hardware for my money by just getting a PC.  I don't think I'd be using the Mac OS much, and I've got a pretty deep distaste for Apple culture.

I want a gaming laptop that can comfortably play Warhammer and maybe some of the more modern new-fangled things coming down the pipe. You know, Spore, Fallout 3, Mass Effect, Bioshock...

The current idea is to grab a Dell across my dear old ma's Dell credit card and do monthly payments, which neatly steps around my issue of having absolute zero credit to work with. Also of being poor.

I don't need top of the line, but my current rig is six years old and ready to be retired to a chat-box/some sort of file server.

newegg

Honestly, you'll find loads more helpful advice in the customer reviews than on here.

Newegg's notebook selection seems to lag a little behind.  The Asus stuff is kind of  nice looking from time to time, but I didn't see the G71 listed on newegg yet.

Hadn't heard of EUROCOM.  The EUROCOM M860TU Montebello doesn't seem all bad.  Not strongly leaning towards it, either.

(Seems like you get nickled and dimed on some components.)

I think a MacBook Pro would be a solid buy. I'd check your school's bookstore or computer store website; you can usually get a link through them, log in with your school credentials, and have your discount applied to the Apple store. If not, you can go to Apple's website and try to log in through your school with their search-y thing.

Personally, I like to keep my gaming to the desktop and keep my notebook computer as light as possible; I lugged around a ~2003 Inspirion an its stupid power brick for most of my college career and it was a huge pain in the ass. I'll probably be investing in an Eee/MSI Wind/Tiny Dell fairly soon. That said, if money were not a factor and I wanted something high end, MacBook Pro all the way.

I definitely don't need to do more than check email and use Google apps when I'm traveling. My biggest concern is size, since I like to stay as light as possible, and this craptop I have now weighs about a metric fuckton. Battery life is a concern, though...

So yeah if you get a Macbook don't spill a damn thing on it.  If it's anything like this keyboard then you'll be facing a total meltdwn instead of the usual slight stickiness for the rest of its life.

My mom's Macbook actually faced similar issues. I assume, though, that it's completely unrecoverable in any way.

MacBook Pro.  They've got pretty solid video cards
9600M GT
That's in a $2500 ($2300 with student discount, but it's still another $240 to insure, so back to $2540) 15" MacBook Pro.

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

This is something brand fucking new and the graphics card is pretty far down the list (#35).  To be fair, there's silly shit like SLI/crossfire set-ups listed, but I'm primarily comparing it to a single 8800M GTX, which has been out for a while.  Maybe comparing it to the 8800M GTX is unfair, due to different power consumption.  (Not that the 8800M GTX hasn't been put in a 15" before.)
