Det: In your hypothetical situation, it makes zero sense that someone who would ever have thought they might have a killer contribution wouldn't already have given me his e-mail, let me put him in as an author, and then I'd never have to touch him again.  This is seriously unreasonable to you?  Seriously?  There's devil's advocate, and then there's just plain getting under my skin.

Per Thad's complaint, threads aren't searchable the way blogs are.

But it doesn't matter.

Let's just run it in a thread.  I'm tired of this garbage.

whee!

I do like Classic's idea of building a foundation here, then moving it all to a blog/wiki of choice if it becomes unweildly.

If we have something set up then I'll add to it as soon as we have time, anyway. Meanwhile, this argument is an entertaining distraction.

I'd rather have something that's fun but peters out and collapses under the weight of too many contributors than something that's tightly controlled and produces a sound beginning, middle, and end but has only three people working on it.

That's an interesting view, considering that if you replace "three" with "two" you've just described Blue Flames, Jaded Views, and most of the Mighty Trinity.

Also Dreams Distorted shut the fuck up Thad.

ANYWAY.

Is everyone else missing the point of this blog idea, or is it just me?

With the blog, each author takes the point of view of a single character, or group of characters, and writes from their perspective, interacting with the other characters from other authors within the bigger picture but at the same time dealing with their own personal goals and problems.  In effect, the "main" blog page gets updated with a fluid, ongoing story, while each author's page also becomes its own cohesive mini-saga within the overall universe.  I think it's a damned amazing idea.  Sort of like what Marvel/DC try to do overall but are too on crack most of the time to pull it off.

Needs a few ground rules to prevent Median Effects trolling, but they're simple enough.  Do not negate or contradict what another author has written.  Do not outright kill, disable or otherwise irreversably fuck over another author's characters (putting them in an awkward position is just fine and encouraged.)  Try to write other people's characters the way the OP would.  Play nice, basically.

But hey if you just want a "serious" KateStory fine we can do that too.  Just go somewhere with it already.  I'm sort of itching to do this.

Would suggest appending "without permission" to those "do not" rules, just in case.

EDIT: First story needs to be a Simo Belmo story.

Fair, but I think the most likely result in this case would be KateStory XVI: The Thad and McDohl Edition.  Which, don't get me wrong, had some great bits I would have loved to pursue -- Dr. Death and the Domed Flagstaff of the Future is one of my favorite ideas -- but just felt lonely.  I want enthusiasm from the group here; I want loads of people to want to contribute.

Anyway.  Who remembers Blue Flames, Jaded Views, or even the Trinity at this point?  Pretty much the same people who've read KateStory beginning to end.

Better still, you could sort by tags.  Like character, location, perhaps a mystic artifact that changes hands several times over the course of the story...

Sort of like what Marvel/DC try to do overall but are too on crack most of the time to pull it off.

There was an issue of the Futurama comic where you could read it beginning to end or corresponding panels told individual stories -- first panel on every page told Fry's story, second told Amy's, etc.  In practice it read awkwardly as hell, but in theory it was a really cool idea.

Anyway...

Let's just run it in a thread.  I'm tired of this garbage.

That, or Det's suggestion of a blog with no restrictions on who's allowed to post (Captcha should take care of spammers).  Anyway, looking forward to it however you kick it off.

I don't know how to do that, unless we don't use Blogger, which is the only service I have any familiarity with.

I mean, fuck, I'd love nothing more than not to have to send e-mails out to everybody who wants to write for the thing.

The format doesn't really matter, we can copy the parts from one place to another if we decide on another location for the story.  I just don't want to sit here wringing my hands waiting for this to get started.

Does anyone besides Kazz and I know that there is already a blog set up?

Was that a secret?

I'm signed up.  Just waiting for us all to decide whether that's actually the location we're going to use.  And I assumed Kazz would start it.
