Hosting Questions
« on: May 06, 2010, 12:36:44 AM »

Alright guys, now is the time where Joxam has a steady income (despite being out of work) that will NEVER get lower and almost no bills (might change but I don't plan on it) and I want to know not only what we need out of our server?

I want to know what do we WANT out of our server?

I've already dropped 250.00 dollars onto it so we wont need to ask for money anytime soon for monthly payments. Moreover, I'm looking into getting the best bang for buck in a map host(s) site for the custom maps we want to play on the server. Any suggestions in that area or just plain riffing about something else ya'll want on the server goes here. I have some money to play with, but remember, I am going to have to maintain this bill going forward so lets not go buck wild.

Wow.

I'll let the technically-inclined make further requests (shit, just pay Zara to create a ton of cool stuff), but I just wanna say that that's ALREADY a totally stand-up move.

Huge thanks, Joxam.

So, as far as map hosting goes, there is an available option directly from gameservers.com called a 'redirect' server. Which is basically an in-house map and other custom content server.

There is no limit on space or bandwidth and its 5 bucks more a month.

I downloaded a test packet from it today and it averaged 1.5 MB/sec speed over the course of a 100 MB download. I was impressed but I've only had quick internets for like half a year so that shit impresses me. What do you guys thing?

It supposedly maintains itself. If we add something new, the first time we use it (map, custom skins) it is saved automatically to the server, and if we don't use it for longer than six months, it clears itself from the server.

Hire an advertising agency to design a logo for the server. Have it printed on the side of a blimp. Use that blimp as your primary means of transportation.

Honestly, ever since custom map downloads got fixed, I can't think of a single thing more that I'd want out of the server that isn't strictly a matter of administration. It already has pretty much the lowest ping out of everything in my entire server browser that I'd actually want to play on, so....

You should fix my admin powers so that I can do more than just kick-ban people. Like maybe I can light an asshole on fire, then kick-ban him.

But seriously set me up with Smiler's access instead of my bizarro half-access, please.

That's not a bad idea, but is the server that full that often? With no admins on to boot whichever hapless pubbie is at the bottom of the heap (or at least, none who'll do that on request)?

How much extra does it cost to have reserved slots anyway? I mean, if it's just a couple bucks then I suppose you can go for it if you want... ?

I guess - even if he is King Midas right now - I'd rather not ask Joxam to spend money if he really he doesn't have to or there isn't much point.

It seems every time there's an update now we get pubby-full on account of being the only working server.

Apparently reserve slots are an SM thing that cost no more money?

As long as it's the type of reserved slots where it boots a pubbie from the server while allowing the server to be full.

The kind of reserved slot where there are three reserved slots and you can only fill it up with pubbies until 29/32 I can't endorse in good faith.

Yeah, this is pretty crucial.

Of all the things we've haphazardly jammed onto the server, I'm surprised reserve slots still isn't one of them.

We're trying to figure something out that doesn't just take up a slot. I am not sure how it works and am in the process of taking a vacation to Texas so I'm in no position to figure it out. Also a few of my admins have finals right now. Give us a couple of weeks, its on the to do list.
