I managed to get my Sim his life goal, which happened to be career-oriented.  I pretty much had him avoid family altogether.

Yeah, it's not impossible at all. It just takes a bit of management.

Oh, and I just learnt that, even though Life Fruit are magical and have the potential to make your Sim immortal, they will still use them to make pancakes, even when there are less valuable fruit available. :facepalm:
