Who the Hell Played Strife?
« on: July 29, 2009, 03:09:23 PM »

This is Strife.

The company that made it no longer exists.  Its release was completely overshadowed by Quake.  It was the last Doom engine game ever made, and nobody has fucking heard of it.

Which is a damn shame, because it's actually pretty fun.

From the manual:

"You are a wandering mercenary, led to the small town of Tarnhill by rumors of conflict between The Order, a well-equipped religious dictatorship, and The Front, the rag tag resistance movement.  While searching for The Front you decided to take a brief rest somewhere that you thought was safe.  The Order acolytes have been rounding up all suspicious characters in the area.  Yes, you happen to be one of them.  What they didn't expect, though, is the knife you keep concealed for situations just like this one..."

From here things quickly escalate to you running through caves and bases with a crapload of guns shooting anything that moves.  Oh, and it has RPG elements as well, like an inventory, shops and talking to people (many of whom have voice acting!) before you stab them to death for their keys or key-like items.

I'll be a bit more mellow than I was with Doom II, partly because there's things to comment on due to the existence of NPCs, partly because nobody's played this before and I'm going to be pointing things out about it and partly because I kind of burnt myself out on Doom II.

This is pretty interesting just because it's an interesting game. I mean, an obscure doom clone with RPG elements, hub-based navigation, a mission system, and voice acting, what's not to love?

My only complaint is the part in the second or so video where you are talking about the structure of the game and how you are in a hub and while you are doing so, you're just standing there twitching around. I really think that you shouldn't stop play just to talk about stuff during an LP. Isn't it a better idea to just use travel time to fill watcher in on details about the game or just not mention them? I say this because whenever I watch an LP and someone just stops playing and kinda stands there so they can explain complex stuff, I don't feel much better for it and you better believe I was just waiting to see what happens in the game next and thinking more and more about fast forwarding.

For me it the opposite. When I watch a LP it's to hear the LPer talk about the game, and it bugs me when the game gets in the way of commentary, especially when it's actually interesting, like this one's.

Just standing around may not be ideal, but when the alternative is having to choose between concentrating on playing the game and concentrating on saying something worth listening to at all, I'd rather endure a 15 second break in the action every once in a while.

Personal preference I suppose.

Heh, you really make Strife look like easy mode Doom, and you made Doom look really easy.

Also, you forgot to get the health upgrade and only got the accuracy one, I'm guessing you get a health and an accuracy upgrade after every mission you finish.

Oh hey. Is this ever coming back? I don't want to exert any pressure but I'm wondering if I should keep my hopes up.

Hak was talking about it in #finalfight. He basically came to the conclusion that rather than a last hurrah showcasing an amazing engine, it was a piece of trash.

That said, I'd like to see more too.
