Mario and Luigi Series
« on: January 25, 2010, 10:09:09 PM »

We all know that Superstar Saga is one of the best GBA games ever made and also the beginning of the recent legitimization of the Koopa Kids in Mario canon.

I am I guess half-way through Partners in Time. It is technically a good game but I can see why I only remembered it as the most forgettable of the three.
Just killed Petey Piranha which is really the high-light of any game featuring Petey Piranha. It also made that dungeon that was about 75% too long almost worth going through!
Also if anybody has played Bowser's Inside Story, say clever things to convince me that I must have it.

Also if anybody has played Bowser's Inside Story, say clever things to convince me that I must have it.
Upon finally reaching his castle and planning to take it back from the usurping Fawful, Bowser is surprised to find that there is a banquet of sumptuous foods laid out just for him because of course there is, because he's Bowser.  There's no way it could be a trap, after all, it's food for Bowser, and Bowser deserves food.
:tl;dr:

bowser is the main character

Bowser is most definately the star of the show, and he's pretty much the best RPG protagonist ever. A favorite moment of mine is a minor NPC explaining something in a tutorial and Bowser interrupting with "TOO MANY WORDS."

The Bowser fight in Thwompcano is pretty fantastic. Probably the standard they should have shot for in every boss battle before it.

NOT fighting the colossal Yoshioob? COME ON.

But yeah for every part of this game I like it's sandwiched between too many enemies in dungeons and the Bro Items kind of sucking or being redundant. Can I use Cannonballer or Ice Flower? OK cool, guess I'll vend everything else.

My big problem with Partners in Time was that even pumping attack every level it took fucking forever to kill any boss with any attack.  It had some charming moments I guess but oh hey here are my copies of Superstar Saga and Thousand-Year Door.

I more think that the Boss Length is daringly long but then they made the mistake of making most of the bosses terribly boring, where-as every other Mario RPG game has easy bosses that could stand to have much more HP.

It was running into 4-6 packs of enemies that do two 10 second long attacks that was wearing me down. That's 4-6 mooks per pack with 4-8 of them per room in a dungeon. Cripes.

Niku just taught me that Trampoliner spam is the fastest way to kill shit and I just found two badges that "Increase Attack but use 2 of the Bro Item" and "Increase Attack Massively but use 4 of the Bro Item."

I now have the vim and vigor to beat the fucking game! Yaaaay.

Yeah wow I take back any words of praise I gave this game. There's the mid-game Bowser Battle and that's it, the rest of it is like somebody made a Mario game based on a vague idea of what a Mario game should be. Ugh barf barf barf.

Oh cool they didn't even add any post-game content so I can just tag it as 100% Complete and never play it again.

:done:

but hey that's another game I've powered through since New Year's. I'm up to like 8 games beaten in three weeks.

I stopped playing that game halfway through. Actually now that I think about it that's what I did with Inside Story too.

It would appear that Bowser's Awesome Adventure is in fact the best entry in the series, revealing the true depth of character and heroism one would expect from the enlightened monarch of the Mushroom Kingdom. Not only is King Bowser a truly manly figure who can cleave through any situation with brute force and burning bravado, but he is in fact an inspirational figure to the downtrodden minions who are not permitted to seek residence in the single, solitary Toad Town! It is by his divine will and boundless ambition that so many dedicated Bullet Bills, Goombas, Shy Guys, Monty Moles and many others may be lifted from starvation and poverty.

Bowser's Awesome Adventure has also taken great strides to distance itself from the pox of Partners in Time, casting off the burden of the generic with a dramatic hefting worthy of King Bowser himself. The combat is a bit more challenging and involving with room for experimentation, there is a window for absolute skill beyond merely being awake and the pacing of new challenges is perfect.

They were even kind enough to give the Mario Brothers a cameo piece in Bowser's Amazing Adventure, a magnanimous gesture of respect for the timeless rivals!

Now that the game's established that Bowser has an awesome right hook, maybe his forward smash in the next Smash Brothers game will be that instead of his shitty, no-range headbutt.
