I love all the superheroes. If you asked me to vote in the poll, I'd probably fail to pick the same five. But I just can't justify listing anyone above Superman. Better concepts and better writing have existed, but nobody is both more super and more heroic.

While I can't stand Marvel stuff at all anymore, I can enjoy Superman & Batman in certain particular limited ways.

Superman is terrible in any continuing series, but is a lot of fun in any one-off tale that tells his whole story (like the Elseworlds series, for instance, 'Kal' or Red Son, or whatever). There is something to be said for just dispensing with the bullshit and heading right to the core of the superhero mythology.

Oddly, I like my Batman sort of opposite. Still in one-off stories, but more so the little standalone stories where he has a minor run in. Like the Batman Black & White stuff. Or the occasional one-issue story where he just runs down a regular hoodlum*. I don't like Dark Knight returns or many of the other "big important" Batman stories, but I love the original Year One.

Those stories that are really just a single serving of that character's essence, those are the best.

*For instance, there was a one-shot which featured
a crook who is hopelessly inept and kept getting busted the same day he commits crimes.

He's released from prison after serving time for his 'third strike' determined to go straight since he's a total failure as a criminal, only he's immediately caught up in another robbery, this one against his will. Batman corrals all the crooks, except Mr Dumbass, who miraculously escapes by pure luck.

The story wraps with Batman telling Robin not to worry, because a small fry like that will always turn up again, except of course the last panel shows the guy did go straight as intended.
I really like that story, and ones like it.

I tend to like the eccentric oddball characters that none of the other heroes can even begin to understand how to react to.

I like Superman, but he seems to attract clumsy writers and metaphors more than other superheroes, so he's not really my favorite. But when he's on, he's really on. One of my favorite Superman stories was in the fourth volume of Superman Adventures DC put out, which could best summed up as "Superman saves literally everything."
