The article does specify Britain individually for several things, I just didn't have the time to pull up the source study or a better summary.

Then remove Northern Ireland, but Scotland and Wales are still part of Britain.

I guess any objection to shutting off, blocking, or censoring the internet in the interest of public safety would apparently fall under "phony human rights concerns." Yeah, that's not even a little bit like Egypt. Pretty fucking hypocritical given how that kind of thing has been unambiguously condemned by the UK every time someone else has done it.

Yeah, I realize that this will never actually happen. Nor should I be amazed that Cameron would suggest it. I just can't get my head around how he's been even more of a living shit through all this than I expected him to be.

You'd think they'd love unrest being organized through social media (as opposed to elsewhere) as it's that much easier to round offenders up in the aftermath.

Did the UK go through with that "ISPs log all traffic and keep it around for 3 years" thing?

Keep in mind that when you see "UK" that also means Scotland, Wales and Ireland.  So yeah.

 :mahboi:

Only the northeast corner of Ireland is part of the UK; the rest of the island is independent.

Interesting article: The Riot Index. There are perhaps some flaws, but it's still a fun read.

David Starkey On Newsnight (Whites Have Become Blacks)

This guy comes across racist in parts, but makes some good points. I think he's right when he says the looting has nothing to do with political outrage. People just want free stuff and are using excuses to placate their conscience.

Likewise with vandals, who just want to smash stuff. As Starkey says, if they're really upset at the police and government, why aren't they attacking police or public buildings?

Because they've had it hammered into their minds that those things aren't as important as owning flatscreen TVs.

I think it was well established from the start that this was much more an outbreak of looting than a protest of anything.  The problem is that the fucking carcinogens think that just because the cancer isn't trying to kill them, they must not have caused it.

I think the other problem is people are confusing "the riots were in part caused by social injustices" with "the rioters are rioting to protest social injustices".

Thank you.

Just... fucking thank you.

You guys are the goddamn best. That just saved me so much ranting.

I think the other problem is people are confusing "the riots were in part caused by social injustices" with "the rioters are rioting to protest social injustices".

Or even "the riots were caused by social injustices".

Because to some people, there can only be one cause for things.

And to conservatives, that cause is always PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY.

And to them, suggesting that anything else has any influence at all is the same as letting the rioters completely off the hook.

Binary reasoning's a bitch.

The rioters did kind of remind me of software pirates

But... I really am.  It's not like I couldn't afford to legally purchase Arkham Asylum and let it fuck up my computer with whatever it wants.

Anyway that video did bring up two interesting points:
1) Every 21st century status symbol can be carried on one hand
2) It's impossible to talk about "white culture" and "black culture" without saying at least one horribly racist thing.

Re: Map - So it turns out that most poor people live in heavily populated, peripheral city areas with sparse vigilance, and riots happen in these places! CLEARLY IT'S THE POORNESS OF THE PEOPLE DOING IT
