He learned, almost too late, that man is a feeling creature and, because of it, the greatest in the universe. He learned, too late for himself, that men have to make their own way, to make their own mistakes. There can't be any gift of perfection from outside ourselves. And, when men seek such perfection, they find there's only death, fire, loss, disillusionment, the end of everything that's gone forward. Men have always sought an end to toil and misery. It can't be given; it has to be achieved. There is hope, but it has to come from inside, from man himself.

Well, that was fun.  If you didn't see it, you missed out!

I did some research into running this with Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud. If we stream a show over Icecast or some equivalent, the way Outer Heaven was done, it will cost us about $0.15 per gigabyte. The video quality for Outer Heaven was about 50MB per hour per viewer, which means we could have a full four-hour Outer Heaven broadcast to twenty viewers for 60 cents per show for the bandwidth. In addition to that, having the server actually running costs a bit less than ten cents per hour. Call it a dollar per week, ballpark.

We could afford to arbitrarily bump up the video quality, since as I recall the purpose behind OH's shittyvision was so that even people on low-bandwidth connections could play. Or we could simultaneously run low- and high-quality versions.

Basically, expenses are low. So I wouldn't worry too much about that. The bottleneck seems to be whether somebody's willing to take responsibility for it and also learn how to use it. I plan to open up an EC2 account in July-ish and start running Outer Heaven again. If we want other streaming going on after that date, we could probably do that as well. Before then, however, you're on your own.

So I'm tentatively planning to begin streaming again tomorrow at 10PM eastern.  I'll post here again when I start with the link and such.

I will continue Street Fighter, or switch to something else in the unlikely event people get bored of it.

PUNCHY POST-BIRTHDAY BASH UPDATE:  Depending on whether or not I can get a particular textbook sold, I'm probably going to invest in a month of NSV streaming so we can get this done right.  While I wait, I'll continue to borrow and return cheesy animated features from Netflix for the purpose of screening-then-ripping them to enhance our potential playlist.

The dream isn't dead, folks!  I believe in me!!

What are the advantages of this vs. free streaming services?  Livestream is ridiculously easy to use and is free, so I don't see myself wanting to switch to nsv, much less paying for it.
