So now that we have our super-spiffy new server/domain, I feel like we should make Outer Heaven into something bigger than a weekly cast.

My idea is to get a Ustream (or whatever works best) that can be accessed by any member interested in streaming.  We can create the subdomain that embeds the stream, possibly along with the #outerheaven IRC channel.  Then whenever someone feels like casting themselves playing Rambo for the NES or whatever, we can announce it on the boards and people can just jump to the stream page and watch.  Of course we can have our regular scheduled events, but I'd like there to be plenty of room for planned programming AND spur-of-the-moment fun.

Feel free to give ideas for the stream or for sites we can use.  I don't want to use Livestream because the ad breaks are really killer for people who don't have adblocker.  I'm fiddling with Ustream right now to see how much harder it is to cast with.

We are a little worried about what Outerheaven might do to bandwidth, hard drive space AND the legality (copyrighted stuff getting our server taken away might suck) of it all. Still I don't know any of the particulars about any of this, and I don't think we're solid on what the actual bandwidth might be, Brent might know more but I'm not sure. However, if you're talking like a video blog for the not once a week broadcasts, that shouldn't be a problem, but streaming bandwidth might still be an issue. We keep OH on the DL most of the time so it might not be a problem at all... I don't know. So, anyhow, discussion! SPEAK.

My suggestion was to use Ustream or some other free streaming service.  If we embed the stream from there onto the outerheaven site, the bandwidth cost will be practically nil.  The video is streamed from the Ustream site, not the Brontoforumus server.

Really, the server isn't a huge factor here, it just makes it much easier to make a clean viewing page on our domain that we can embed our own chat onto.

The other advantage is that accessing and using a shared Ustream account is much simpler than figuring out how to stream from the server itself.  I want to have maximum accessibility for both streamers and viewers.

That makes everything a lot simpler, really. I guess you learn something everyday, especially when you don't know any more about this kind of stuff except where to send the check. :D

I see a small problem with this plan.

Mainly that it still relies on a creappy streaming site which is why OH II failed so badly.

Ustream is not as crappy as Livestream, but yeah.

I need to talk more with Brentai about the Icecast status. I hope to have the Christmas Special ready for this Saturday.

Just fiddled around with the Ustream Producer, and it seems to be about as easy to use as Livestream Procaster.  Is there some glaring issue with the site I should know about?

I know we're not going to keep interest in this forever.  My hope is that if we set up the site properly, we can still have that easy access to streaming so if someone decides on a whim to throw up a stream it won't be a hassle.  That will make it much simpler to revitilize interest after a lull in programming.

Ideally we can set this up to run such a service ourselves, but I admit I've been ignoring things on this end lately.  I can say that we have plenty of resources left for dicking around with however.

Ustream might not take so kindly to our wanton disregard of copyright on old cartoons. Also, unscheduled shows are prone to nobody showing up because they didn't know it was going to be on.

We're a very small community.  I don't see why Ustream would even notice us unless we were advertising the stream somewhere more public.  I honestly don't see that as being a problem.

Nothing I can do about no one showing up, but I want the option of spontaneous casting to be there.  If you're just playing games, does it really make a difference if no one's watching?

I don't know the logistics of running that sort of thing.  Would streaming from our server be any harder than from a free site?  I've been harping on accessibility, but I guess the poll will gauge how many people really care about casting themselves.

Accessibility will be entirely dependent on how much I or some other plucky engineer(s) decide to give a fuck about making it accessible.

The beauty of building our own interface is, oh look, we built our own goddam interface.

I guess we'll start off on the free sites, and if it becomes available later, we can transfer things to the server itself.

Ran a successful audio test off the server, so we're pretty well on schedule.  Bongo wants to run a video test on Friday night and I'll probably set up my own tomorrow (Let's Watch the Shit in Brentai's Netflix Queue!)

I'm excited to hear about the lineup.
Strictly to make fun of Brent's poor taste, of course.
