Boy/Friday, don't you know those games will rot your brain
« on: December 29, 2010, 03:30:44 PM »

So, this is mostly about having been playing games for too long. Shit like this happens to me all the time, but I'm walking through a totally innocuous room in Mass Effect 2, and the first thing I think to myself is "Boy, I don't like how much cover is in this otherwise normal room". Like I say, I end up thinking like this all the time. If it were tabletop, people would accuse me of meta-gaming, but I just can't help myself. When I come back through here, there's going to be a firefight.

How much do you guys do this? I'm sure you're all as bad off as me. I know the Pokemans can't even think in words anymore, just numbers.

If you play Tetris, you will dream of Tetris. They did a study.

I don't just dream of Tetris when I've been playing it, I start seeing it in any grid pattern I come across.

Years of Doom .wads have ingrained in me that doing anything of even nominal importance will result in something either teleporting into the room or coming out of the walls, and that something is going to be revenants more often than not.  It gets to the point where in some megawads you can go "then a skeleton popped out!" just as you pick up keys and have it be perfectly accurate narration for what happens next.

Because it's always revenants.  Nobody likes them, which is why everyone puts them in maps all the time.

OK, let's say you like playing video-games a lot. So much so that you can actually reasonably imagine how a game designer is thinking when he creates a section. This wouldn't be impossible, so there must be an environmental cue to help me: Oh, there it is. They intended somebody to beat this game, so I just need to find the solution, etc.

OK, now you're also a fan of the written word and plot design in general, so you study up on that a bit.

Congratulations, you can now ruin 50% of surprises in any given media before they occur!

My friend wanted to slap me when I guessed the last few plot twists of Infamous before they happened.

Yeah, I do that in games all the time, any other media as well. That's just being chock full of trope knowledge, really.

Until last night (when I dreamed I beat up the Prime Minister), I had spent the three preceding nights dreaming of nothing but Minecraft blocks.

I suddenly feel like I don't play enough videogames.

I mean, I dream about videogames. But usually they're games that aren't made yet.

I just beat the Last Boss of Dead Rising 2 by assuming the developers were so lazy and stupid that they would force me to a fight a boss who strips me of my inventory before the encounter...

... but they wouldn't check to see if I drank a bunch of temporary stat boost drinks(-50% damage taken primarily) between the time I drink them a second before I open the door to the cinema, and the fight starting.

Also Dead Rising 2 is a good game that could have been great if it wasn't saddled with the worst controls in the world.

"I'm about to do something new, I'd better quicksave in case I fuck up." "Oh wait, you can't do that in real life, nevermind."

Played so much Enter the Matrix once that I dreamt of playing an Enter the Matrix that didn't suck.  Was sad when I woke up.

Had an Arkham Asylum dream last night, where Batman entered a long corridor, at which point the Joker announced that Batman's punching was "weak-shit", then a bunch of thugs filled the hallway.  Batman angrily looked at his fists before going into a punching rage mode.
