REPLY 100 (wheeee)

So I finally bought this game and I'm playing through it.

It is pretty frustratingly difficult for all the wrong reasons.

Reason one being pixel hunts and reason two being Gigafraugs.

That essay made me angry. Has Nintendo forced Sakamoto away from story-writing?

I've been spend so much time being frustrated by gameplay that I'm all raged out by the time a cutscene shows up, but I think I get what they mean.

On the other hand, I just played a segment where she attacks a member of her squad in order to protect a civilian, which was unexpectedly in-character.

tl;dr

Quote
I think the most charitable explanation is that Sakamoto wrote the dialogue without thinking about its implications for the characters — simple bad writing, in other words.

The "abusive relationship" interpretation is interesting (in the same way that "Tom Bombadil is evil" is interesting), but it's lots easier to chalk all the issues up to expediency and lack of skill as a writer.

If this IS a prequel sort of thing you can say Samus' future personality is in fact the product of her having to overcome her current one.

It's set between Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion.

I like how most of the bosses and midbosses go the same way for me:

First try: briefly survive and get my ass handed to me
Second try: Survive longer, do some damage, start to figure out patterns and weaknesses, die anyway.
Third try: Brute force it using what I've learned.

Nightmare is probably the best example. I was actually thinking too much at first, trying to use the multi-tiered environment to my advantage. Eventually it just became alternating between charged shots, sensemove, jumping to dodge, and super missiles to the face.
By the time I got to the rematch with it, in just one try I managed to unload super missiles into it fast enough that it literally never got off the ground.
Seriously. It's supposed to climb a four-story shaft and then fall down it in its death animation. I killed it before it could even get airborne.

Also: I'm not finding the story as terrible as expected. It's still bad, but it's "action movie" bad, not "Sakamoto is an ignorant hatemonger" bad.

Beat it; loved it; playing the postgame and trying to get 100% completion.

I actually thought I had more game left. I didn't realize I had fought the final boss and I didn't realize the game was over until I noticed how long the cutscene was getting.

For the postgame any time I have to use a Power Bomb and fight one of those beetle things I am basically staying waaay the fuck back when I set it off and then unloading Super Missiles on them until they die. I fought one the "real" way. Never again.

Not only did I beat the game in less than a week, I 100%ed  it in less than a week.

...is what I'd like to say. I maxed out my energy, plowed through every enemy, souped up my concentration to my fullest potential, accel charged my beam up the wazoo, and beat the shit out of Phantoon in only one go. AND made it through the escape sequence with a minute to spare.

...But there was a bug or something that kept a single door in Sector one from opening for the entire game. It's supposed to open in the epilogue. The only thing there is a single missile tank.

I got 99%.
