Cleave
Chapter 3
Forged Melding's Bright

I caught her running over the corpse of the cat, its neck caked with the coagulation of a slow death. I leapt from its shadow as she crossed it and was upon her in seconds. I told you before I was the third character introduced. You, Sam, Amy, the Cat. Sorry to have deceived you, but as I said, if this didn't hurt you it would hardly be worth my time. My short, short time.

And now I found myself tangled in the black hairs of a small human. She trotted over the grass, keeping her eyes on the moss as Sam had taught her, watching the sunlight sprinkling through trees too far away to be distinct as she broke into a sprint: Over piles of leaves never touched by feet, she tilted.

A black squirrel and a red squirrel, a lightning-charred tree stump, a tributary creek; they rushed past as her pounding heart leapt. I can beat him, she thought. He's brave, but I'm fast! The smells of the forest cleared her head and gave her mind a rush, memories crashing into thrill to create joy.

There came a place where the path forked and she stopped, suddenly both a bit unsure and panicked.

As she made her choice and bolted off, I took her.

Her body (not quite a corpse) slid into a tangle of roots along the bumpy, earthy ground, her arm ripped and her knee bruised. She lay upon the grass gasping as I remodeled her mind to fit my body more perfectly. It was a simple process and one I completed instinctively.

I stood her up and then in a few short breaths I was her completely. There was nothing left of her will or soul.

Sam. My master, my maker. I tried to decide how best to meet him at last. Back the way I came? Along the left path, where the low branches of a moss-bearded tree obscured the trail ahead? A tiny body like this would easily hide there.

I scooped air into my new lungs and had my first thoughts of otherness. It was the contrast between my old form and this new one, perhaps. Perhaps this being I'd invaded would not appreciate being snuffed out. Perhaps, I finally concluded, Sam might not appreciate the act. I started to sweat a little.

I saw the right-hand path, which sloped down. A dangerous choice for me. Being only recently three-dimensional, slopes I deemed an achilles heel of sorts. Still, the child might pick such a path to gain speed while running.

I contemplated but another short moment.

Something in me told me to go left. I ignored the tiny voice. Still, I entertained the notion more seriously. The left path had a great ambush point, not that I feared Sam's escape. Somehow I knew where he was even then.

I would later learn why.
