At this point "App Store" just seems to be the dominating nomenclature for "digital distribution service". The rest though, yeah, cross-platform compatibility is going to be the best part of this. Especially handy if Steam manages to get people to start hooking up non-windows gamer boxes sometime over the next few years.

And Steam handles dependencies, right?  Like if a program needs some kind of weird library (or even a fairly standard one like DirectX or .NET) Steam will install it?

That's what's always bugged me about Apple's App Store (well, one of the things).  It's like someone looked at apt-get and decided to copy it except for the part of it that is amazing and the entire purpose for its existence.

The standard for Windows games has always been for installers to include their own dependencies, so there hasn't been much call for it in Steam.  It does roll stuff like DLC into its parent application though, so I'm assuming the mechanism is there.

Steam does handle dependencies. Every time you launch a game for the first time it does a bunch of first launch prep, installing all the latest versions and necessary extensions for DirectX, and whatever else is needed.

Hey Steam, I get why you won't let me RUN a game in my office at the same time as I'm running a game in my living room.

But why the fuck can't I DOWNLOAD a game in my office at the same time as I'm DOWNLOADING a game in my living room?

...and I shouldn't be downloading a game in my living room in the first goddamn place.  I already downloaded it.  And now you're making me re-download it in a "more efficient format" before I can execute it again.

You know what would be more efficient?  NOT HAVING TO WAIT THROUGH AN 8GB GODDAMN DOWNLOAD BEFORE I CAN PLAY A GAME I ALREADY DOWNLOADED.

For the moment it seems that only a few items can be sold. Can't wait until all TF2 and Dota 2 stuff can be sold. Should be good. I plan to sell off all of my TF2 items, see if I can maybe get some Keys for the Dota 2 chests I have.

Speaking of items that can be sold, I just got this
Quote
Under Internal Revenue Code section 6050W, the U.S. Internal Revenue Service requires us to determine whether you are a U.S. citizen or resident alien before permitting you to sell more than 200 items in the community market in a single calendar year. If you are a U.S. citizen or resident alien, the IRS also requires us to collect your Social Security number or other Taxpayer Identification Number. Please note that we are not required to report this information or information about your sales to the IRS under section 6050W of the Internal Revenue Code unless you engage in more than 200 sales in a single calendar year AND the gross sales proceeds from those sales exceeds $20,000 in a single calendar year. For more information, you can view the Community Market FAQ here.
To verify your citizenship status, and if required, to verify your taxpayer information, please respond below.

If you sell a lot, GabeN wants your info, just a heads up.

It sounds like it isn't Gaben who wants your info, but he will collect it before it's strictly necessary as a cyoa.

Amazon does the same thing with it's Mechanical Turk service. As soon as you make a little bit of money they ask for your tax info, even if you don't make enough money to actually be required to pay taxes.
