Wait so you haven't used it on monster hunter?
Anyway, PS3 controller would be great but you know what's greater, an actual PS3 release of Monster Hunter. So you're you know, not stuck with PSP graphics on your 40" screen.

You know, I don't even care about the graphics, just having it with a proper controller and on a console would be enough.  Infrastructure multiplayer would be nice, too, while I'm wishing.

Hm, I heard the PSP Go was likely to go down in price since it's discontinued.  But I saw the 3K at the local Wal Mart for $130, and you might be able to get cheaper if you kept an eye on Dealzmodo for a week or two.  Depending how soon you want it.

It's worth a shot - I can definitely wait a couple of weeks on this.

The controller functionality's pretty dang cool, but I don't have a PS3 controller and I believe the PSP 3000 has video out anyways, so it'll probably be fine. Wider screen is kind of the big selling point here, to be honest.

Hrm, looks like the PSP 3000's price drop to $130 happened early last month... seems unlikely they'd drop it more anytime soon.

I suppose there's War Of The Lions if you're into that sort of thing

And I am.  Also, the Mega Man rereleases.

Suppose I could always buy the discs, download some torrents to run on the system that won't play discs, and call myself square with the Lord.

So I installed Half-Byte Loader on my PSP go and a handful of emulators.

I'd just like to say:

Playing Metroid: Zero Mission with a PS3 controller on a TV is the greatest thing. Sometimes I like to arrhythmically mash buttons and make "boop beep" noises just so I get the full "you are playing a video game in a movie" experience.

Install a button that plays the level start noise from Pac-Man when you press it.

There's a great Tactics Ogre port on the PSP. Look into it.

How did you get the PSP to (1) show on the TV screen and (2) listen to a PS3 controller?

I assume this involves a PS3 and their funnky connection thingy, but lay the details on me all the same. (For some reason, I thought that connection mode only let you see the PS3 screen output on the PSP.)

The PSP2000, PSP3000, and PSP Go all have an accessory that can be used to hook them up to a TV screen. The PSP Go also functions as a Bluetooth receiver for PS3 controllers.

What BB said. There's a fairly easy process to sync a PS3 controlelr with a PSP go and you can get component cables and charging cradles for next to nothing now. I can hook it up to my TV and connect a controller wirelessly, play a game, switch video back to the unit itself and disconnect the controller, and continue playing the game while on the bus (or what have you) without even having to turn it off.

What I'm getting at is that I invented transfarring.

Seriously though it is the secret best home console if you like Japanese RPGs and emulation. The entire setup cost me under a hundred dollars (if you don't count the TV and PS3) and it's the easiest system in the world to hack at this point.

PSP Go still retails for about $30 more than the PSP3K, though, and has all the various issues people griped about.  Plus I don't own a PS3, so a PS3 controller would set me back another $35.  Still, worth considering.

I can't remember who is and is not Canadian, and I don't know whether or not this applies to US stores as well, but I've said it before and I'll say it again: buy games at Staples. Nobody ever thinks to buy games there, so they'll get a few copies of big titles but never sell them. Six months later and they're on clearance. Here's ones I can remember seeing in the last few weeks:
-PSP Go: $80
-Metroid: Other M: $20 -20%
-Assassin's Creed Brotherhood: $30 -20%
-Super Mario Galaxy: $30 -20%
-Super Mario Galaxy 2: $50 -20%
-Call of Duty: Black Ops: $50 -20%

So yeah, not an expensive console at all if you're looking for it.

Can't say I've ever seen a PSP at a Staples, but I'll keep it in mind.

If you see one and it's still got a high price listed on it, ask the staff to check. Big ticket consumer electronics has a tendency to have price changes go unnoticed for whatever reason. Both my PSP and my TV were far cheaper than their respective tags said they were.
