My vote went to Final Fantasy X-2. I hate everything about FFX-2. Why did I vote for it? Well...

For starters, I bought it on eBay for $1. I didn't even bother playing it when it arrived.

A number of months later I was out in middle of nowhere on a boat, well away from any road or city. I had just gone through hell only to discover that the one thing I wanted from life was unattainable. I had narrowly avoided becoming grizzly chow, all of my possessions had spent a few hours in a saltwater bath, and the hundreds of pounds of food on board had begun its transformation to the most horrid mold imaginable. I had failed. But I did not want to go back, not yet.

So I set up my solar panel, hooked up the PS2, and played Final Fantasy X-2 from start to finish. On solar power. Every time a cloud passed in front of the sun I had to start over from my last save. Often I had to let a charge build up for hours so I could play for one. Even so, I made it through the bonus dungeon on the first play and beat all of the unfair uber-bosses without a walkthrough, even the cheating bastard at the bottom.

As god-awful as it is, it is the game I spent a month playing in the most beautiful, serene place I have ever been. It is the game that cheered me up in a time of absolute despair.

For that reason alone is it the best game ever.

I pressed my face against the glass, smiled as my breath made some pattern or other. The world beneath unfurled before me like a sail glinted in gold from this rich dawn sky. Awaiting the ship they had told me would come, quietly anticipating that which was to come. I couldn't yet see you, still obscured by the city. The towers of glass reflected your coming, silhouetted on the sunrise. Did I blink as I watched? Did I close my eyes?
I was not alone, I think it was the first time. Watching you rise splendid and graceful, I cheered as you sailed, a greatness unknown. I laughed as I waved and imagined you saw me. In the streets of the city, the windows of buildings, a million faces gazing upwards in wonder. A million faces together and cheering and smiling. You were the warmth of their hearts. You were the sum of their dreams. In the coldness of morning you brought warmth to their lives.
Giving this feeling of wonder I could not imagine you unlocking these thoughts, no book and no picture could ever convey this feeling, and morning had opened a door. I stepped into a new world. I watched you fly, saw you as a friend, the spirit of dreams. I imagined a new world, lands far away, and imagined those faces as you hung in their sky.

I remember getting banned because of a conversation we had here (or rather, back on the old boards) about Final Fantasy X-2.

I don't remember what the conversation was about, but I remember winning it because I went out like a blaze of glory in that I drew a crude picture of myself in MSPaint having sex with everyone who pissed me off's mom while everyone who pissed me off was watching me have sex with their mom while masturbating to it.

Ah, who am I kidding? It wasn't just me who won that day, it was everybody. Everywhere.

Good times.

You know, I just started FF5A and my God it is amazing how different two translations of the same game can be.  I think the difference is even more dramatic than Dragon Warrior NES/Dragon Warrior GBC, or FF2 SNES/FF4 the 57 other translations.

...wait, hang on...

...I think they just released a new FF4 port while I was writing this post.

FFT/FFT:TWotL

But yeah it always annoyed me at Square when the translators would break the accepted translations for things.  Especially in Heroes of Mana when they started busting out insanity like Navarl and Roget.

Just buy the damn PSP already. There are barely any posts on this forum anymore and half of them are "Still haven't bought that PSP yet."

Is this the FFV that came on the PSX FF Anthology disc?

No. FFV Advance is an original, high-quality translation with some bonus content at the end. The Anthology version's translation is basically incomprehensible.

...anyway.  Yeah, Sei, the PS1 Anthology version of FF5 is in fact the "before" in my comparison, while the GBA version is the awesome one.  With no disrespect to the fan translation, which I enjoyed but which didn't fill me with the kind of pure joy that the GBA one does.

What would be neat would be if somebody could hack the GBA script into the SFC ROM; the only real problem with the GBA version of the game is the inferior sound.  (I knew there was a guy working on that with the FF6 Advance script, but never heard of any such thing with 5.)

It really is interesting how much difference you can see in three different translations of the same script, and how much impact those differences can have on your enjoyment of an oldschool-style game where the plot is basically just a skeleton to hang the Job System on.

Thanks. Guess I can toss FF5A into my queue, thanks to the PSP homebrew I mentioned in that other thread.

OKAY OKAY I BOUGHT IT.

But I can't play it yet.

Because I'm waiting on Amazon for the memory card.

Because they cost like half as much there as in a B&M store.

...
...you're going to dekarma me again, aren't you.

Nah, Amazon's a smart choice. Enjoy your games and emulators (after you get your card)!
