Worst Mario-related Music
« on: April 24, 2012, 02:12:59 PM »

Guys, I need you to solve an argument I'm having with my fiancé. Which is worse:

"Do the Mario", ending theme for the short-lived, late 80's - early 90's TV cartoon The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!
Super Mario Brothers Super Show Credits - Do the Mario!

"Walk the Dinosaur", a Mario-themed cover of the Was (Not Was) song by George Clinton for the 1993 Super Mario Bros. film.
George Clinton & The Goombas- Walk The Dinosaur

While "Do the Mario" is certainly not good, it's got charm. I think "Walk the Dinosaur" is undeniably worse, and certainly more embarrassing, even if it existed prior to the movie.

Do the Mario is quirky.

That version of Walk the Dinosaur may very well be the anti-life equation.

Walk the Dinosaur is definitely the better song, but luckily this isn't about the song itself and about the horrible cover of it.

And fuck you Captain Lou poured his heart out for you and this is what he gets?

Hm.

Do the Mario wins on charm; Walk the Dinosaur wins on the technical proficiency of the performers.  It's pretty damn phoned-in by P-Funk's standards, but they're definitely better musicians than Captain Lou.

Visually, there's not much to either one technically but the edge goes to the Walk the Dinosaur video because it would take you at least an afternoon to make it in iMovie.

On strength of the source material, Walk the Dinosaur is a catchy, mildly-memorable bit of late-'80's pop, while the Super Mario Bros theme is actually really a hell of an achievement.  It's not merely catchy, it's very clever technically.

In terms of the thing they were tied to, well, The Super Mario Bros. Super Show and Super Mario Bros.: The Movie both have some good ideas but ultimately are not very good end products.  The Super Show is, obviously, still much better than the movie.

I guess ultimately I gotta say Do the Mario is the better thing, because it's more FUN.  George Clinton is one of the most fun damn performers in the universe, and his video makes me want to put on some music where he's not just phoning it in for a paycheck.
