Well, and keep the people who are inherently neither the very closest.

What I don't understand is anyone framing this as him being purely exploitative. A lot of the utilities he made were things which were universally considered useful and which he distributed for free.

The problem with people like him is that their natural inquisitiveness and desire to skirt the rules of the system have impaired his ability to have judgement towards the long term consequences of their actions to themselves and other people.

His nature and ability may have helped him create a lot of very useful tools for the community, but they are also responsible for him being such a damaging asshole. By his own admission, he ruined TF2 twice.

He's a liar. He made TF2 a better place both times. By basically doing away with unlocks and by taking away dumb things from crazy people. He's all wins in my book.

Remember, this is Kayin (of I Wanna be the Guy fame) he counts as "crazy people" vis-a-vis videogames.

Hey, I laughed at that, but remember, -Valve hired him-. Also will anyone actually say that TF2 was ruined by the idler program? Is anyone going to make that dumb claim? In fact, that probably helped expedite more reasonable drop rates. Also, is anyone also going to claim that him gaming some golden wrenches ruined anything for any of you? You know, an item that you had virtually no chance of getting to begin with and just convinced people to scrap and combined items because they're hilariously easy to manipulate with farmville style bullshit?  Lts be honest here, no one was negatively effected by the idler program  (I mean, you can text-mode idle now, can't you?) and the effect Drunken Fool could have had on the bullshit Golden Wrench contest was statistically insignificant. Compare that to things like the backpack examiner and the guy has clearly done more good than bad and the 'bad' he's done sorta makes him a desirable employee, especially considering he probably passed some other tests.

Everything he did was indicative of curiosity, initiative, interest, and talent. Employment is a very reasonable response.

But it's also very different from this thread, which is about MMO exploits and disproportionate responses thereto.

There are only so many ways to say "BioWare is too lazy to patch things and EA is more than happy to cover for it if it means screwing over customers".

I want to clarify a few things about DF:

Both the idler program and the script to combine and smelt metal were outside things attached to TF2.

After the idler program, F00l was told directly by Valve to not make third party programs that directly messed with TF2 like that.

The golden wrench thing involved a third party program, and subsequently he was banned for that.

I can't speak for others but that bit of information does not actually invalidate anything I've said.

I think this is a hazy line too because like, one thing is something that emulates a client and another is something that can be done using autohotkey.

Oh I fully agree with hiring him in a "friends close enemies closer" sort of way.

Just saying, it's not that he was banned just for exploiting the system, but also because he was outright warned to never exploit it again using third party things.

Oh I get it now! EA's gonna hire all the players they banned. They've been planning it all along, right?

I don't see the relation between those two topics, unless it's some sort of obscure zing that I don't get. dtsund was the one with the Golden Wrench, and he still plays.

No there was no relation. I just misremembered who it was that had it.

BioWare founders announce retirement, which kinda just confirms what we already knew: BioWare's totally subsumed at this point.

A pity.  I still like BioWare.
