BGM, or Sound Effects?
« on: June 29, 2008, 01:28:43 PM »

Okay, so I know asking people to choose between BGM and Sound effects is retarded because no one has ever needed to (I don't think), but for mobile gaming it's different, and I'm asking this so I can decide which way I want to go for my Zelda game. A lot of phones only have one sound channel, so you can't play sound effects while playing BGM.

Anyway, given the choice, which would you say is more important?

I know for my games I usually go with BGM for the intro screen, start of levels and end of levels, and then sound effects during actual play. Really though, more people just need to write some decent mixer API and then we could do whatever.

BGM stands for Big Gay Men, doesn't it?

If so, the choice is obvious.

Sound effects give players more feedback and make the experience more interactive.  I'll take additional player cues over a slice of ambiance.  I like my axe crunching into an enemy's face.  Other reasons to drop music: different people have different musical tastes, decent music is hard to make, and decent music with broad appeal might be even harder yet.
