On a similar note, if a boss can change its elemental strengths and/or weaknesses, they never change the strength to something your party uses a lot of and/or their weakness to something you either don't have or don't use.  Or, if they do, they don't leave it there.

They also rarely remember to change their strength to getting hit in the face with pointy objects.

Hope you didn't like your home village or childhood friends, because unless they end up as party members, that shit is gone.
Which is a damn shame, since "My Home, Sweet Home" is the best song in FFV's entire soundtrack.

The more intricate, puzzle-like, and focused combat is, the easier it becomes obnoxiously repetitive startlingly fast.

If you punch enough things enough times, you'll learn to throw fireballs.

Well of course.  The fireball is the natural evolution of punching, just as vacuum blades are inevitable progression of swinging a sword, and earthquakes the ultimate result of pounding things with a hammer.

On a similar note, weapons possess little to no weight, no matter how large.

COUNTEREXAMPLE: arrows, pebbles and feathers all weigh one pound each, since nothing in the world can weigh any less than that.

Now we're just quoting the RPG cliche master list. (I know I am guilty too).

The RPG cliche master list hasn't been updated in half a decade and doesn't include new stupidities like, say...

The main character of the game is not the main character of the story.  He's not even important.  But for some reason, no matter how famous and influential a person is, and no matter they much he or she defies authority, they all can't seem to so much as shit without the main character's say-so.

Tidus started it.  Or did Zidane?  Either way, it seems to be bleeding out to other franchises pretty quickly, although I can't say for certain since I don't have time to play RPGs that I'm not getting paid for anymore.

I think it's Crono's fault.  Or maybe Butz's.

The stronger you punch, the better the door. So there are like super strong murderers who punch people into Venetian doors and shit"

Hey, Butz did plenty awesome, he just chose to surround himself with high company!  Every single party member was royalty, like NPCs are going to care what the dumbputz Butz thinks!

The "character who does not serve the story except to hold the audience's hand" archetype isn't exactly a new thing.

I've already bitched at length about what they did to Finch in the movie version of V for Vendetta, but just to recap: in the movie, he doesn't actually do shit; he unravels the mystery and tracks V down, only to just stand there at the end.

I dunno, Chrono has as much to do with a horrible space-traveling evil as a frog does.

SPOILERS: Butz only appears to be an accessory.

And suddenly I realize I haven't actually completed a Final Fantasy game since VI...
