That's just the stupid preloader ad. The game works fine.

This game is pretty much required reading as a consummate example of how the rules of a game can describe the character of the protagonist (or vice versa). It's something dessgeega tries to demonstrate in most of her games but this time she's really knocked it out of the park. Basically, the game plays exactly how you would expect to play an oppressive, predatory tyrant who is also a spider.

Plus it has art by Kinuko which doesn't exactly hurt

"Finally, here you are. At the delcot of tondam, where doshes deave. But the doshery lutt is crenned with glauds.
"Glauds! How rorm it would be to pell back to the bewl and distunk them, distunk the whole delcot, let the drokes uncren them. But you are the gostak. The gostak distims the doshes. And no glaud will vorl them from you."

You're welcome/I'm sorry

Hahahaha, The Gostak? That's far more rewarding and comprehensible than trying to decipher Lighan ses Lion, and it's actually playable. I would not have thought to try linking it here, though. Good thought!

For something a little more accessible but maybe in the same ballpark, try For A Change.

Bleh, not really a fan of the Gostak. No offense to the game, but I don't enjoy the type of puzzle game where the enjoyment of the game is based on figuring out what the commands are. I'm more of a Fate/Varicella type, where you spend your time exploring the mechanics of the game under limited knowledge circumstances, more of an "interact with world, find reaction" than "decipher linguistic puzzle" game.

Friend, what did you think of Savoir-Faire, assuming you've played it?

In other IF news, I just learned that Robb Sherwin's Cryptozookeeper is out. Screenshots 1, 2, 3, 4

I haven't played it. I'm not really sure why, because one of my first forays into IF was Galatea and I really enjoyed it. Besides that and Glass, though, I haven't really touched any of Emily Short's other works. Big fan of Adam Cadre's games though.

Yeah, I can understand that. It was actually the other way around for me—I got into IF through I-0 and Varicella, and then found myself fascinated by the conversational complexity in Galatea, Best of 3, etc. Savoir-Faire is one of the more "traditional" Emily Short games, and it always kind of reminded me of Varicella for some reason.

Oh yeah, there's a free version of Arma 2 now, it's pretty fun, they turned the graphics down a lot so it looks pretty crappy, but it still has all the level editor, non-campaign single player and multiplayer stuff there, and you can screw around with vehicles and weapons in the armory game mode. It convinced me to buy the full combined ops pack, it's good times.

Good Old Games reached 6 million downloads, and to celebrate, they're giving away Broken Sword for FREE until Oct 1st. Also, some lucky bastard is getting the entire catalog for free.

Aleph One hits 1.0.

Quote
The release sports a new engine, high-res textures derived from the 8-bit originals. Marathon 2 gets the look coded some years back for the Xbox Live version of the game. Disapproving purists will be pleased to hear the first and third games retain their original look.

Only the huge HUD from Marathon, necessary to keep the 3D rendering window as small as possible, has gone.

Sexy.

Played a lot of deathmatch on the Marathon trilogy back in high school but never got into the single-player; have always meant to.  I'd say "no time like the present", but I just got through reciting a partial list of games I've recently bought.

Necronator 2 is a surprisingly deep RTS type of game. A lot like the first but with a lot more to do.

Theme Hotel just made me want to get SimTower working again.

(which is actually abandonware and can be played using an XP emulator if you're on W7)
