there's one good reason for diving into a likely nest: if the engineer has just started building the sentry, you can usually torch it, the engie, and everything around.

Of course for every time I do that I die 10 times to a sentry  :nyoro~n:

You can also rush sentries when they aren't fully upgraded by waiting until you hear the telltale level up noise. They can't fire until the transformation is complete. More than enough time for a pyro to run in and circle strafe it just to be safe or for a heavy or soldier to run in a blast it at point blank before the sentry has time to do much to them.

Are you sure Pyros aren't faster? That just makes their W+M1 a bit more pathetic.

I'm not sure, because it's not my research, but I believe the wiki, if only because of how many times I've chased the classes marked at 300 speed and never caught up.

Pyros, Snipers, Spies, and Engineers all have the same run speed: 100%. Medics are like, 107%, and Scouts are like 133%. As a rule of thumb, backwards speed is usually just about -10%. I can't remember backwards speed or the heavier class speeds.

This is why for spies, the best disguise was always pyro, but is now probably spy. You don't lose running speed and you can be anywhere on the field.

pyros look faster because out of the 100% classes they're the only ones likely to run full on ahead instead of stopping to do things

To clarify, I mean -10% of their percentage, not a flat -10. The Medic goes to about 96%, the 100% classes go to 90%, the scout goes to... 120-something? It's weird.

Don't forget that you move faster forwards than you do backwards.

JD, are you lagging? Was that post supposed to come before the 5 or so posts discussing move speeds and how moving backwards is slower by 10% or are you just an idiot? I'm really curious.

Pyros generally "blunder" into sentry nests because they know they are perfectly capable of wrecking the entire thing unassisted given the right angle.  Actually getting that angle is usually pretty hard though, especially with that stupid hardhatted fleshsack getting in the way.  Still, someone has to throw themselves into that meat grinder eventually, and the Pyro bestows a transcendent suicidal outlook to anybody who selects it.
I tend to fall into the category of "If you have no demoman or spy coordination, facetank the sentry until someone else shoots it down."

Sadly, anyone firing a single projectile at a sentry during this time is impossible.

I just realized that basically all the servers I play on are alltalk. Since I seem to have abandoned my pathological aversion to using voice chat, I think that now would be a good time to actually try coordinating things over voice where the enemy can't listen in.

Unfortunately, the pubbies I've played with on non-alltalk servers generally are either completely silent, or just mumble "sentry over here" or "uber over there", or micspam.

That's one of the few things I do well. When I get to a teamtalk server and noone is talking, I usually start the process going and push it along. If people get the message and speak up, our team starts to magically do better.

played on a teamtalk server today which was a lot of fun, and pretty strategic.  The best moment on our end was when our team was stumped by a sentry and two snipers collaborated and did a counted-down 100% charge shot on it to break it, allowing the rest of us to push the cart.

I am having a hell of a time learning rifle-sniper. My mind just always shoots too soon, too late, or not at all.

I like to just take any shots I can. Body shots do a lot more good than you'd think and not shooting at all is failure to team.

Yeah, getting off a few solid body shots makes you at least as useful as kamikaze W+M1 pyro.

That doesn't sound that great, but it's a damn sight better than the traditional 'useless sniper #3'.

Sorry, kamikaze pyro is still the absolute bottom.

This is more of being practical as you learn the basics: actually hitting targets to have an effect on the fight, doing so consistently and frequently and doing so for as long as you can(where-as kamikaze pyro breeds the terrible idea that it doesn't matter how much time you spend waddling back from the spawn AT LEAST YOU DID SOME DAMAGE AM I RITE.) If you weren't learning, you'd just be taking the head shots. Kills come naturally when you are allowed to "work", so to speak, so you need to learn to maintain up-time and to make it count.

Ask the Red Team about Doom + cp_steel.
