After the Pyro Nerf, the User-Made Items Debacle and some of the dumber bits of The WAR update, I am genuinely terrified.

A month or two ago, Valve assured us they were working on the next class update, going so far as to demonstrate a failed design. Weeks pass and there's no word on any progress. Now this.

Pure embittered conjecture time: They can no longer justify the man-hours spent on updating a game that is no longer earning any relevant revenue. Valve members doing work on TF2 can no longer request the time or resources needed to properly work on the last class update. As a result, the project has been unceremoniously dumped on the community by way of a solution.

Anyway, taking the longer view gives us a few additional thoughts

1) Can we be bitter about hats now? We'll never know for sure I guess, but if they blew so much company time puttering around with useless dumbshit that the core gameplay was negelected, well... let's just hope we never find out that that was the case.

2) On the positive side, there's an outside chance this update will be the best ever. If they just let that Brazilian kid do everything.

3) So... we're never getting the last two "meet the" videos, are we?

If they're gonna stop working on the game, they need to at least give servers (via modders) the power to tweak the weapon balance.

Then we can have servers where the game is utterly unplayable, and servers where it is the very essence of perfection.

Additional things noticed while re-watching the video:

- There are blueprints for a robotic arm behind the engie.
- There's a poster on the wall with an image of the Pyro. Can't read the top text, but the bottom might read "[...] of the month" (looks too short for employee?)
- It looks like the engies working on... the flamethrower? (see propane can in foreground)

Hm. Perhaps meaningless. Perhaps not.

Also there's a theory going around that this is a Valve prank of some description and that the community is not in fact expected to create the update. Though pretty much everything is just a theory without real basis at this point.

Most obvious is that he has a hammer/mallet instead of the wrench.

I might be a bit  :derp: right now but I didn't get the "Now you make stuff for us" from the video. I took the "Now it's your turn" in a completely different fashion. Debating what that meant though. Either talking to the engie or the people the engie will kill.
Of course, I am probably missing a post somewhere saying something

That would be cool (and I have suggested similar things, though not publicly) as long as you don't actually have to move it around manually. Just have it float near wherever the Engineer happens to be.

Lottel, you're not missing anything, just people being dumb and misinterpreting things.

It's my cynicism. I've been joking about valve taking crap from the community for the engie update for a while, and then that line popped up.

Okay, why Valve hasn't hired that man is beyond me.

Say, someone brought this easter egg page up elsewhere. It seems like it was part of the classless update, but I sure as hell don't remember anyone finding anything like this back then.

Is this new or not?

I've seen it.  People are figuring it just means that AI Bots will be released with the Engie update.  Although some more speculative people think that the bots will actual have robot'y character models, pointing at some of the stuff in the background of the Engie's garage.

Well, I've been doing more reading and there's a couple of theories.

The first is that all the robot stuff is indeed for bots - even though bots exists already (I've seen quite a few servers using them), they will be "officially" released, with skins to make it obvious that they're bots. Seems perfectly reasonable, though lackluster.

The second is the obligatory "OMG MECHS" theory, which seems pretty harebrained to me.

The third is that the engie's sentry replacement is a combat robot of some kind. Bits of information that MAY support this, include the fact that the 'engie building' unit class was allegedly recently coded to have a "moving/not moving" tag, and also the fact that this would be an excellent way to prevent catastrophic turtle wars of extreme death boredom.

The sentry replacement being a combat robot is consistent with the blueprint visible in the back of the teaser video. Since this is for the last class update, however, it would be very much in-character for Valve to just throw all this out there as red herrings.

In unrelated news, yesterday's update seems to have fixed the stuttering issue for me. Hooray!

Baseless speculation: The engineer unlocks will depend on something that the community does. Build more dispensers than teleporters, and we get patrol drones. Build more than a certain number of sentry guns, the new type of sentry is unlocked. After three conditions are met, the event is over.
