Seems to me like the TF2 base is waiting for another more exciting thing to come up, except nothing's appearing to take its place. Instead everyone wants to make WW2 clones.

This is probably the correct analysis. TF2 is very unique in regards to what it does, even if it has been buried under far too many layers of hats and crafted human souls. I don't see a competing game anytime soon, simply because any new competitor would not only have to capture the feel that TF2 had at the beginning, but also be of a similarly high level of quality on release.

HUM!

It DID look pretty fun. I'll have to read up on it again though, I seem to recall that there was one thing I really didn't like, but maybe I'm misremembering. I do recall an overall positive opinion.

"For those of you with more beard on your necks than sense in your heads -- those of you who feel compelled to analyze my every word with the exacting scrutiny of the socially disenfranchised -- I will provide the tedious technical details. From December 23rd to December 30th, a period of exactly one week, the rate at which items drop will be doubled. You might call this a "Double Drop Rate Week," but I call it an act of mercy. After all, we can't very well send you charging into battle without a proper gun now can we? "

A key. Log in and it gives it to you.

Opens any crate, Festive or Normal.

I got a Demo Sword and Pyromancer's Mask, passing a winter crate to a friend who used it on theirs.

Another friend had 3 accounts, and got 3 Demo Swords.

Ouch.

Statistically-speaking I wonder what the best crate to open is. Maybe Christmas Crates, just because they'll disappear (making the contents rarer)? Or maybe a series 9 (on account of it's items all being worth more than the price of a key - at least for now)? Maybe even an 8 or 7?

Are they doubling the drop cap, too?  Or just the drop rate?  'cause I care less about it taking 4 hours to max out instead of 8 than about being able to get more things this week.

I'm pretty sure it's the cap that's been changed. The blog post is just worded poorly.

The way item drops work is there is no cap on items you reach per week. Just a cap on the time you're allowed to get drops in. It's around 11 hours.

Essentially, this week you will get twice as many items in your 11 hours.

This also means that among us, we can probably get everyone hooked up with new weapons they're missing. I'll post again later with the spare extras I have, but right now 2 Candy Canes, a FISTS OF STEEL, a Cladheimmor and 2 JAGs are sitting around in my backpack doing nothing.

Ouch.

Statistically-speaking I wonder what the best crate to open is. Maybe Christmas Crates, just because they'll disappear (making the contents rarer)? Or maybe a series 9 (on account of it's items all being worth more than the price of a key - at least for now)? Maybe even an 8 or 7?

If you're going for raw value, Series 9. The only item inside of it that you could get another way is Softcap - you're all but guaranteed to get your money's worth out of it, simply because even if you get a Softcap, it's not like you can't trade it for something good.

Christmas Crates are odd because you need a special key for them, but yes, since they'll vanish, they are the most 'valuable' to open, but run the risk of getting a weapon you can get easily later on.

I think christmas crates have more hats than any other. Also Demosprite how much do you want that pyromancer mask
Sorry, but I will probably be holding onto it simply by virture that it came from someone doing me a favor. If I get a second pyromancer mask, though, I'll flag you down.

Holy shit SUPERFAST PYRO is the best thing.

So hey that Shogun pack update.

new Spy knife is balls awful except for I guess stabbing when under fire? But at 60 health a light breeze will kill you.
Katana is hilarious on demo with the targe and okay on the Soldier. Katana, Concherer, Kabuto. WEEABOO FORCE, ASSEMBLE.
Concherer's rage builds on damage you take, so you'll have a full rage bar if you just step out to the front lines every once in a while. Health return is not stellar, but is great for helping everyone get some health back on a push.
Fan-o-war is...I haven't messed with it much, and everyone always seemed confused and thought it was a graphical glitch when I bopped someone with it. It's good ifyou're a decent SCout and can do hit and run. Dart in, bop the medic, and then they go flying in pieces.

Crafting Recipes reduced. New Vintage items as well - Loch N Load + Caber, Crossbow + Amputator, Brass + Steak + Warrior's Spirit.

Concheror is pretty useful to support a Heavy in the line of fire.

Probably because it won't exist until a patch on Tuesday.
