You can also camp dispensers to be a self-healing turret. Works wonders on PL defense, and your engis won't complain about you watching their stuff.

Well, Heavy on defense has never been as much of a problem. It's offense where the Heavy needs a bit of a helping hand.

I don't know, some people can still dominate like crazy with a Heavy and good teamwork, so any pump for Heavies is a bit dangerous.

The heavy on offense must be a combination of distraction and area denial, the centerpiece of a push in which every other player can perform better on account of his presence.  It's not a role where you'll get a lot of points because competent opponents know better than to go where you can kill them, but even competent opponents know that they ignore you at their own peril, and if they decide to take on your 450 hit points' worth of meat then it's more time for your demos and scouts and spies to do their work.

The offensive heavy is more obviously better on low-pop servers though, like the soldier, because the amount of damage done in any given encounter is much lower than on a full server and his high health is more meaningful then.

I still consider Heavy my favorite, with his amazing ability to point in the general direction of an enemy at non-Sniper distances and make them die, and also to survive many hits.

Because he's so slow, though, not many people want to play teamwork with him on offense. Medics, sure, but your average Medic isn't going to be able to reliably deal with a Spy, who can soak up a couple needles or a bonesaw in the one-second gap between uncloaking and killing, and depending on the map, your average defensive Sniper may have a buddy with more firepower nearby, making him rather irreproachable.

A decrease in the distance-based damage reduction on the minigun might fix some Heavy problems.

A pyro can use a nearby Heavy as a mobile cover that can be fired through.

I was intrigued by this spontaneous discussion among several peers that the Heavy was somehow lacking.

I decided to investigate.

And now I must join you in your protest. It is simply inexcusable that I should have to risk sharing that #1 spot with a degenerate pyro.
