Wall jump is supposed to be difficult. It's basically a secret move that lets you get anywhere you like. It's like a warp whistle.

I'm going to have to wonder how I beat Super Metroid without a guide when I was younger.

The secret is Super Metroid isn't really that difficult or counterintuitive.  TA just stinks at the vidya, I guess. ::3:

Do you guys remember that time I gored Disposable Ninja with words because he said "Final Fantasy 6 sucks" instead of "You know, Final Fantasy 6 isn't my cup of tea"?

How's it hangin', TA?

I can understand having a hard time adjusting from a version of Metroid that's pretty much "wall-jump is the answer to every problem" to a version where you're not even supposed to know about wall-jump.

Oh, and Doom, I love it when you pick on the marginal idiots of this board.  It makes your penis look so huge.

This can only confirm the suspicions I've already given you by my absence in the "Status of my Rod" thread.

You're getting in a little too deep, Plisken.

...you use Bomb Jumping to do that one-square-passage-in-a-wall, TA.

Except for the passages that are five or six squares up in the wall.

Except for the bits where it's necessary to proceed.

Do you understand how terrifying the words “vibrating strap on” are for an asexual? That’s like saying “the holocaust” to a Jew.

The what, one, two places in the game?

Erm... that'd be never, unless you fall into that !@#$ pit, then you either speed-jump out or reset.  And there's a ball jump powerup specifically to remove the need to chain bombs.

Brent's right.  There is only one place in the game that the wall-jump is actually required.  And that's the part where the little dudes show you how to do the wall-jump.

Yup, if you find yourself in any other place where it is "necessary to proceed", then you're doing something wrong.

The default controls in SM really do suck, though. If they hadn't included an option to change them, I wonder if I ever would have completed the game way back when.

Isn't that wall-jump section "optional"?

Yes.

Well, in fact, it's optional, without unnecessary quotation marks.

Man, my sense of direction is so bad that I pretty much need the minimap up all the time in Metroidvanias and even I managed to beat Super Metroid without a walkthrough.

I think Super Metroid has one or two bits that are sticklers. Like when you have to find your first Super Bomb and the goddamn glass tube.

You can bomb jump infinitely.  And diagonally. And it's piss-easy.

Seconding the fact that TA just isn't that good at it.

I absolutely suck at bomb jump, but have no problem wall jumping. Go figure.

SLOPPIER controls? Are you INSANE?

Thats all I'm going to say. As for wall jumping, don't press away and jump, hold away for a second an dpress jump. Any other time you don't have to wall jump. Ever. It's just there to break the game as far as I can tell. :P

My guess is it's a bug they discovered during playtesting and decided to just keep instead of remove because it was cool.  They threw in an extra area just to let people know it's there, which would explain why it's so oddly placed.  Beyond that, they didn't really have time to go back and deal with the fact that you can poke all sorts of holes in the map with it.

Better than Strider NES, at least, where it is absolutely necessary to progress, and very obviously a bug.
