Google announces its own WebKit-based browser, Chrome, with a comic by Scott McCloud.

CNet has a much shorter, much more boring feature rundown.

According to the horse's mouth, the beta will be available tomorrow. I can't wait to try it.

Today: Google Browser. Tomorrow: Google OS? Perhaps they're one in the same.

It looks like they've specifically cooked up their browser to fix what Vista breaks in every other browser.

In other words: Google is about to make a lot of money cleaning up after Microsoft.

Meanwhile, I shrugged off the first time they claimed the new tab page was their idea, but then they went back to it to remind you that the tab page was their idea and they would just love if every other browser took it.

Ahem.

That's Speed Dial, you motherfucker.  Opera has had it for years.  You didn't even change the fucking 3x3 layout.  This is why people get pissed off at Open-Source guys.  No respect.

These aren't just tabs, Brentai. These are memory-fucking tabs. They crash by themselves!

Yeah, because nobody in the closed-source world would EVER refer to features the competition has had for years -- or even DECADES -- as if they were a brand new idea.

(Can't find my link about the smug asshole at MS pretending they just invented sudo, but pretend it's on the word "decades".

Related: I can't find a LOT of things I've posted about before what with Pyoko still being down.  Is anyone ready to talk about just moving the old forums to a new server as an archive yet?)

Oh hey, the guy who shouldn't be making new topics beat me to it.   ::(:

Yeah, I'm using it now.  Hasn't exploded yet or anything, but I haven't gone anywhere else.  Going to do some work now, and then later I'll stress-test it with some marathon porning.

...yeah, that's kind of a large reason I grabbed it within 12 minutes of the beta release.

From the incognito window page:

Also, I admit that New Tab Page is a lot smarter than Speed Dial, although this may piss off a number of people (like those who get rapehentai.com as their first dial (I have no idea if that's an actual site and I'm not going to look)).

Taking my QA instinct and putting it to use; this may just be the first beta I've ever actually bothered to send reports for (other than the WoW beta in which I was the first person to get to Undercity and find it completely fucking broken).

Just finished reading Scott McCloud's portrayal of the developers' rationale behind Google Chrome.  Pretty convincing arguments.

They had me at "won't crash completely when one tab does something stupid", which is really the problem I've been having with everything else.  Again: Vista broke it, Google fixed it.

If anyone finds the "keep status bar visible" option in their travels, let me know where it is.  It's kind of disorienting to see it constantly popping in and out of existence as I mouse around the page.

Also can't find an easy way to turn off the cache, which could get hella annoying if I use the thing to develop pages (probably will have to continue to use IE for a good long while, in reality).

I'm waiting to see if it has any unsavory hidden features before diving in.

Like "Will rape your bird" or "Sends all porn to the FBI" or something.

Using it now and it's kind of okay.  Seems like it'll be more amazing once it's been out for a year and web developers come to grips with it's various features and such.

So far, so good. It's snappy, simple, and seems to make good use of memory as advertised.

The only things I miss so far are Adblock and autoscroll. Middle mouse button needs food badly.

Oh hey, I didn't even notice that missing.  That said, I probably will.  Very quickly.

You know how when you're having a dream and you try to punch something or run, and you realize you can't move?

That's how I feel without autoscroll.

Download manager's a bit weird - each download belongs to the tab that started it, which is fine and totally in keeping with the "each tab is its own process" thing, but it takes some getting used to since very often you have a tab open specifically to start the download with, and would usually close it once the download's been queued and go do something else.  Mostly takes getting used to, except for the fact that if you do close the tab, Chrome just throws those downloads out the window instead of warning you that you're about to terminate them (like every other browser does when you do something to stop the DM).

Much more irritatingly, Windows Media Player is pretty well integrated into the thing for media downloads, and I'm not sure how to, erm, dis-integrate it.

Autoscroll and plug-ins are hurting it for me.  The status bar uses an annoyingly hard-to-read font, and I don't like how long I need to hover for it to show up, though.  Extended settings will make Chrome more bearable.  Here's hoping that the minimalism fetish doesn't get in the way.

I also don't really like that it skins everything but the scroll-bar.  It creates a kind of incongruous aesthetic.
