The fucked-up chronology of the first series was a really, really brilliant piece of storytelling.

I hope they maintain it.  And I hope whatever DVD release ends up here is fucking correct; why would anyone put the series out in chronological order.  it's fucking maddening.

I'm going to go against the grain and say that the achronological order was completely and totally pointless.  Most episodes were stand alone and relied on very little information carried over from previous episodes to understand.  It felt more like the producers simply fucked up the airing than any grand plan, and a few episodes felt jarring as two-part episodes lost narrative steam because another episode was wedged in between.

Haruhi was a good series in-spite of the fucked up chronology, not because of it.

On the other hand, I wouldn't change the first episode for the WORLD.

Actually, the first and last episodes are the only ones I consider crucial.  The rest could be juggled around to no ill-effect.

I honestly think that seeing the show in chronological order would have killed it for me.  They created mysteries where there could have just been a rote "here is a series of events."  I think they managed to feed us little bits of the story in the perfect dosage while still maintaining a sense of wonder, primarily because we know at Some Point that things are strange and that Kyon, in particular, is comfortable with it, but we have no idea how or why or what is going on.  In chronological order, we'd solve all the mysteries right away and then just sit through a bunch of silly stories about magic people.  It'd be shit.

Every once in a while the chronology thing was clever at times (like how they keep referring "back" to the very last episode broadcast-wise) but annoying most of the rest of the time.

Not entirely sure about this trend of anime first episodes entirely misrepresenting the rest of the series.  I suppose it's intentional?  So you have to watch at least a few episodes to be able to judge if it's good or not?  That's horrible, underhanded, fuck-you nonsense, and unfortunately saying "You're going to turn people off of anime entirely that way" is actually encouragement to that backward-ass sub-sub-culture.

I wouldn't call it a recent trend. When I saw the first episode of Tenchi Muyo I thought it was going to be about a doofy high schooler fighting demons with his demonic buddy (a la Ushio & Tora). Then it got all... hot springs.

I thought something similar about Yu Yu Hakusho but then it turned into Pokemon.

Well the 6th-to-8th episode moodswing is a time-honored tradition amongst the goofy-mecha-to-angst, goofy-cowboy-to-angst, goofy-highschool-dead-samurai-to-dbz-and-angst, goofy-space-fortress-slash-giant-robot-to-angst...

Well, okay, the EIGHTH EPISODE ANGST thing is nothing new.  It's the VERY FIRST EPISODE being about something entirely different from the actual series is what I mean.  Tower of Druaga was actually both the best and worst offender, presenting itself as a gag comedy while making you not actually care that it really wasn't.

But Near and Mello are so crap and Light is an even bigger dork with a god complex and I still hate Misa soooo much and raghflbragkl.

It's almost worth it all to see
Light go down like a punk, though.
swimming lessons!

I thought the Haruhi non-chronological order dealy was clever. You see a pile of laptops in one episode and you know there's going to be a story behind it.

You also get things that you don't notice until the second playthrough, like in the baseball episode where Haruhi decides against putting Mikuru's hair up in a ponytail.

This evenings scheduled One Piece simulcast will not be shown tonight because some schmuck decided to hack the Gibson.

Quote from: Funimation's One Piece video site
As anime fans know, FUNimation Entertainment and Toei Animation had planned for the first ever online simulcast of the series ‘One Piece’ tonight at 9:00 pm CDT., just one hour after its premiere on Japan’s Fuji Television. Unfortunately, in the last 24 hours we have determined that the FUNimation servers were compromised, even though we employ strict security standards. An unknown individual accessed and posted episode 403 online and as a direct result of this illegal act, all U.S. and Canadian fans will be deprived of access to this great anime series for the immediate future. We will make every effort to locate and prosecute the perpetrator(s)to the fullest extent of the law and will provide updates regarding this most serious matter

Hm. I don't watch, but I'm not sure that's the smart response.

Punishing everyone for the actions of one person might work if you can use that as a deterrent or get the others to turn him in, but the chances of either happening is infinitesimal. If you ge no solid benefits out of it, it's just pointless vengeance that will piss off the legitimate viewers (which is the vast majority of the audience and customer base).

Presumably FUNimation is doing it to appease Fuji TV and Toei.

Now that the entire internet hates this idiot, maybe he'll think twice before breaking the law in order to watch a cartoon early.

No he won't.

Even if this idiot stops, someone will now try it just for the thrill of trolling.

Expecting conformity rates of 100% is silly. Just amp up the security if need be and try to keep the riff-raff out.

I'm less than a minute into the first episode of a series called Basquash!.

... It appears to be about giant robots playing basketball.

That is all.

ADDENDUM: It is about giant, car-shaped robots playing basketball. It's also incredibly pretty.

FURTHER ADDENDUM: Lunar Bust.

The servers weren't compromised, the network people at Funi were fucking retarded and simply made it so it was like One_Piece_Episode_403 on their servers, and all the episodes that were already on there were in the exact same format.

The dude went to episode 1, changed the URL to 403 and bam, it's 'compromised'

And yeah, given that the episode was stolen before it aired in Japan, period, the jp people are pretty fucking pissed.

On the horizon, the most promising show concerns mecha playing basketball.

:mahboi: Episode Two provides major improvements.

So, Sky Crawlers.

Points for computer effects, hushed pallet, pseudo-WWII technology, adorable dog mascot, and liberal use of canards. Demerits for Metal Gear-esque intrigue and conspiracy babble.

Oh, and Mr. Invincible Enemy Fighter Pilot at the Beginning:
while not expressly forbidden, shooting pilots in mid air after they've already bailed out of their plane is generally frowned upon.
