I can't remember a specific 'first' anime.
Those in the running:
Robotech,
Voltron,
Urusei Yatsura (the beautiful dreamer movie to be specific)
Sailor Moon
Tenchi Muyo
Akira
Somehow not Evangaleon, to this day I've yet to see more than 10 full episodes, yet know the entire plot for some reason.
Whatever else was on Toonami.

YEAAAAAAAAAAAH

My local PBS station ran this in the late '80s, and also ran Tenchi Muyo / Evangelion / Please Save My Earth / Key The Metal Idol and others in the early/mid '90s.

Quote from: Yon Wikipediarrrrrrs
Starting in April 1981, KTEH started showing the British science-fantasy show Doctor Who, and continued to do so until January 2003. On April 10, 2007, KTEH resumed airing "Doctor Who" with the 2005 series starring Chrisopher Eccleston. KTEH has also aired another British sci-fi show, Red Dwarf. In 1998, KTEH and aired the entire season of Red Dwarf  VIII in one night. In doing so, many episodes were shown on KTEH before British television.

KTEH was also the first to air Neon Genesis Evangelion (rated TV-14, TV-PG, and TV-MA; subtitled) in America, as well as the Tenchi Universe (rated TV-PG, dubbed) TV series. These shows were later shown on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim programming block. Other anime that have aired on KTEH include, but were not limited to, Dirty Pair Flash (rated TV-PG; subbed), All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku (rated TV-PG; subbed), Sakura Wars (rated TV-PG; subbed), Serial Experiments Lain (rated TV-PG, dubbed), City Hunter (rated TV-14; dubbed), Please Save My Earth (rated TV-14; dubbed), and Urusei Yatsura (rated TV-PG and TV-14; subbed).

Fuckin' A, Red Dwarf.

You think that's bad? I've never watched a single episode and I know the plot. I owe it to Susan J. Napier and Jeremy Parish.

Meanwhile I've seen every episode and movie twice and honestly don't have a clue what's going on.

Also Dragon Ball for me, but I really blame Sci-Fi Channels "Saturday Anime" feature for making it a thing.  Introduce a 13-year-old boy to Akira and Project A-ko and he's pretty much done.

I used to buy the manga because I liked Sadamoto's art style a lot a few years back. Still have the first 10 volumes, but never got the last ones because Sadamoto flipped out and never finished the manga adaptation.

Then again, from what I hear, it's probably best that way.

That reminds me of the time my brother rented Project A-ko. I remember being "This is kinda hot, but why doesn't she have any nipples?"

Also: Ninja Scroll on Teletoon's late night block, back in '96 or '97. Once I'd got my rocks off to the chick with the snake in her cooch, I was convinced that all of their midnight offerings would be as hot or hotter.

Imagine my surprise when the next week's show was Wings of Honneamise.

The Noozles and the Manx Mouse movie on early Nickelodeon technically.  Startin' to watch the JAPANIMES purposefully was .. well, I am not 100% sure, but it started not long before Sailormoon began its American run in that mishmashed time frame with it, Ronin Warriors, Samurai Pizza Cats, Teknoman etc because I was aware of the stuff from SOMETHING before I started watching it on TV.  Probably Ranma tapes.

The one thing I always remember from Ninja Scroll is when the local lord whoever is giving orders while banging that chick in the ass. That is some sublime comedy, I tell you.

Also: Wings of Honneamise is probably my all-time favourite Anime ever.

I had only known about Astro Boy through Calvin and Hobbes, and had never seen it until it was running on Adult Swim somewhat recently.  Robotech and Voltron were pretty much the first ones I saw, but I don't think it really clicked until I caught raw Akira at an RPG convention back in highschool days.

These days anime seems like an insane asylum run by the inmates.  Last show made that I recall really enjoying is Cowboy Bebop.

Diebuster was pretty much the last for me, although I am liking those new FMA and Hellsing remakes they're doing.

Yeah, I guess FMA and Hellsing are more recent.  I'm cool with them.

Hm. Same here.

Though I did like Samurai Champloo, but that was by the same guys.

Bebop & Champloo are close enough that when you say you like one, it's implied you like the other as well.

My gateway was either Urusei Yatsura or Sailor Moon, depending on how you look at it. I saw Urusei Yatsura about five years before Sailor Moon and was reading/watching my brother's stuff before that, but Sailor Moon was where I got crazy about it.

As for if new anime is any good...sorry, but the ratio of good to crap is about the same as it's always been, you just know more anime now. I've been watching stuff from the 70s and you would not believe how dumb is, but the 70s also produced Captain Harlock and Rose of Versailles. You can do the same for the 80s, 90s, or 00s.

Ignoring random episodes of Pokemon I happened to see in college while hanging out with a guy who would go on to work at Microsoft, the first anime series I ever sat down and watched part of was Evangelion, entirely as a result of Parish's Thumbnail Theater. I'd never have actually purchased anime if it weren't for this community discussing Azumanga Daioh and Cowboy Bebop. You guys also turned me on to Haruhi (which I like for a lot of the same reasons I like Metal Gear games) and Gurren Lagann. Oh, and I think I watched Excel Saga, once. That's effectively all the anime I have ever seen or had any interest in.

I give the nod to Champloo, personally.  The dub is phenomenal: The worst I can say for it is that it gets absurdly gratuitous with the swearing sometimes.  Overall I still think it's a little more sharply written then Bebop though.

I don't really go out for teh animes all that much.  I had watched bits here and there growing up, but never went out of my way for it until it kind of became the thing when DBZ hit its stride back when on Toonami.

Most recently I watched the first ten episodes of Slayers Next on Youtube (Funimation is really awesome about hosting episodes themselves).  I need to pick up the boxset, because it is so good.

I'm sort of surprised there's not more anime in the vein of Samurai Champloo. Everything I see these days is sprawling shonen epics and "moe".

The only people with time or money to spend watching cartoons are kids and single losers?
