...that's almost exactly what I didn't say, though.   :wat:

(Bullet point: Contemporary anime is fine, but it caters increasingly to a niche market.)

Vandread's somewhat old now... it has to be, because I remember it.  :derp:

And the problem with the niche markets is that they're TERRIBLE niches. Harem anime et al are about as close to fanfiction written for pure self-consumption as you can get.

Japan really, really likes tragic unavoidable last minute deaths no matter how avoidable they were, especially with selfless sacrifice involved.  The only thing Japan likes better is faking out the same.

Japan does.  Thanks for reiterating my point in a narrower fashion!

They both need to cut that shit out.
Wasn't the whole point of the series that bullheaded tenacity can change even the most dire of situations? If I just saved existence, you better believe I'd get out my Drill Dozer and bring my damn girlfriend back.
Summation: In the end, they did not, in fact, row row fight da powa.

The whole point of Gurren was to be a gigantic throwback to the robot shows that the creators and their fanbase grew up with.

Any point beyond that was not considered.

I think the point was also that sometimes you just have to accept some things and not be so obsessed about changing them. But mostly that it's up to the next generation to keep going forward.

This is also why Simon didn't use his powers to bring EVERYONE BACK TO LIFE and became a hobo.

This is also why Simon used spoiler tags.
But yeah, basically it happened because Simon was like, "O-hey! You're disappearing in the middle of this awesome giant robot battle!"
And Nia was all, "No, it's cool. I know it's just been your goal to rescue me this whole time, but fuck this guy up even though it means I'm going to be lost to the ether, OK?"

Kamiya also handles being dead pretty well!
So, besides the one guy in the orange gi, what the hell was the difference between that and <insert anything filmed in Hong Kong in the last two decades>?

Oh, and being billed as the "1st Ever Live-Action Movie".  Mm-hmm.  You may try to erase that last one from your memory, China, but you'll never erase the Moonwalk Magic from my heart.

On the end of Gurren Lagan:  While it conflicts with one theme of the show.  It does go with on of the other, not nearly as awesome themes.  Namely the "The next generation rising to take on the world" one.
As for Nia, yeah, that was fucking inexcusable
I take
Kamina's death, and acceptance of death
as part of this theme too.
