Arcanum is a really good one. It's like if Fallout had magic and was set in a fantasy steampunk victorian era England.

Oh shit, can't believe I forgot to recommend Arcanum.

Yeah, Arcanum is one of my favorite games of the past 15 years or so.

(The dog is my skeleton key.  What's the point of learning to pick locks?)

(Also on my second playthrough I rolled a Half-Ogre Pit Fight Vet named Captain Dumbshit, with an Int score of 1.  The journal entries he writes are HILARIOUS.  "Funny nome man gave me necklis and told me to find a boy then he die. Him funny.  And ded.")

I'm partial to "Worthless Mutt" and was always disappointed that his name changed after you healed him.

I named mine DUR. But yeah, if you want to beat Arcanum without an ounce of trouble, Half-Ogre Pit Fighter is the way to go. No magic, no technology -- just crazy retard strength and fighting skills second to none. Truth be told, I'll also use DUR when I play Fallout, and I like to imagine that they're all the same guy. Like, he's some crazy, immortal, time traveling, dimension hopping super human who has absolutely no concept of what he's doing or where he's been.

But the thing that really drives me nuts is that I can never really play the character I want: someone who has no combat skills whatsoever and relies entirely on wit and speech to survive.

Then they fucking send me into a zombie and giant spider-filled dungeon.

I wouldn't advise it on a first playthrough because you'll never really get a good sense of what the fuck is going on.

(And also there's a lower Int limit on some quests, though you can get around that with potions.)

Isn't Arcanum one of the games where a sufficient Persuade score can let you just talk the last boss into killing himself?

Still, yes, you have to fight spiders on the way there.

having high charisma lets you attract multiple followers who level up with you and with the Educator background you have -1 max followers but you can train them to give them skill perks

vergil pretty much messes people up with a magic greataxe and enchanted plate armor and Expert-level melee and dodge

Big Acclaim sale on GOG.

Oh hey, last time we posted in this thread we were talking about Arcanum?  Well it's $2.39 this weekend.  So's the Zork Anthology.  $4 for Police Quest 1-4, Kings Quest 4-6, or Space Quest 4-6.

Startopia is a fun game where you make a space hotel in an abandoned space station. You can pay to open up other decks to expand, or hack the shutters of an opponent's deck to steal their customers/destroy their stuff. It also supports modern resolutions.
