Good Old Games
« on: September 03, 2008, 09:17:18 AM »

So there's this website, right? DRM-free, digitally distributed classic PC games for cheap! Finally, I'll have a chance to play the original Fallout. I signed up for the beta.

I mean, this is a great idea. Most of these games would just be abandonware - their original developers can no longer support them, their publishers no longer produce them, they won't run in their original condition on a modern PC, and people still like them. So these guys pick up the games' original code for a song, clean 'em up for the modern era, and start selling 'em again. No DRM and no launchers because apparently they figure it's just not worth their trouble to crack down on pirates, a sentiment I can appreciate.

I signed up for Gametap to play Fallout, but as far as I know it hasn't shown up yet.  Not that I've checked.  My gaming backlog is enough to keep me busy for a year right now, not to mention, erm, life.

It's there. I can't really get into it though.... it's so... old.

Though I should say that you do have access to the entire Sam & Max series now.

So these guys pick up the games' original code

False, per 1up:

Quote
We don't have the source code for games, so we can't do the optimization that way. It takes a little magic from our programming team to make it work. The biggest issue with the old games is the installation process -- every old game is optimized to install and run on the operating system from back then. Modern operating systems use different libraries and engines that sometimes collide with old games files, so our programmers search for such incompatibilities and bypass them with their great talent -- and little programming tricks that us ordinary people wouldn't understand.

A pity.  If they had the original code, they could port it to other OS's.

Good Old Games launches, promises to be 100% DRM Free

We'll see if they can keep that promise. But right now, Descent 3 + Expansions for $6 is highly tempting.

I'm curious if the GoG version of Fallout 2 can have that "FIXES ALL SORTS OF SHIT" fan patch applied still

EULA doesn't allow changing ownership of a purchased game.

Pass.

Not the point.  They're claiming to sell you a game, when they're actually not giving you ownership over anything.  They're claiming to be DRM-free, when their system is such that they're giving you no rights at all.  Fuck them.

So, out of curiosity, what games do you play?

Well, they allow your gender to be Chap, gentleman, dude, or ninja.  A few others two, I forgot them however.

I really don't get it, here.  They're retailing games that go for $5-$10 anyway, so all it really is is kind of a specialty store.  I was hoping for something more like Gametap, which for a monthly fee offers you a collection of games which you might not otherwise put money on.

They're pushing hard on their "You buy it, it's yours" thing, Brent. I read interviews elsewhere, they pretty much have assumed people are going to pirate their games anyway, so they're not going to waste money trying to stop it. If you buy a game, you can download it to 100 machines if you want, and burn it to 500 CDs.

That's what they're saying, not me. Anyway, I'm totally up for this, my stint in the mental hospital made me miss out of a LOT of games.

That's not the point.  The point is there's not a huge fundamental difference between GOG and a giant bargain bin.

Except that these games work on Vista and XP with little to no trouble?

And also, what the hell is wrong with bargain bins? I love bargain bins.

Exactly. They've said they have worked hard to make sure this shit works with XP/Vista, and have stated their intent to try and pack in all patches that they can with their games.
