Businesses and porn? They got the short end of the stick; the guys at the Interior Department's Mineral Management Service got free cash and hookers, which is in pretty much every way better than a side business and some jpgs.
There's an air of legitimacy to it though.  Sure, you're wasting time and money, but at least it's not straight up graft and prostitutes.  Right? :nyoro~n:

It's the difference between getting fired and going to prison, yes.

114-1 to impeach Blagojevich.  The 1 just didn't have enough hard information to go on, which is fair.

Blagojevich skips own trial, compares self to Gandhi, Mandela, King.

Quote
Blagojevich said expletive-filled transcripts of FBI wiretaps in which he plots to swap his right to appoint Obama's replacement for a cabinet post or high-paying job for himself or his wife do not tell "the whole story."

"I think the whole story will tell a story of a governor who is on the side of the people, who takes on powerful interests, expresses frustration and uses some language that, frankly, had I known somebody was listening, I wouldn't use," he said.

I can't help but think he's just going for the refuge in audacity angle at this point.

I'm normally good at following bad/twisted logic but his claim is fucking baffling me.

I guess he's just going for the classic "outright lie", but directly saying "I tried to demand money for a senate seat, but I did it for THE PEOPLE" is...I don't even know.

I haven't followed it that closely though, is he denying he was saying that?

I think he's claiming his words were taken out of context and that stuff about "it's fucking golden and I'm not just fucking giving it away" meant it would go to the most qualified person.

Which might have been a useful tactic if he'd tried it a month ago and not said all the other crazy shit he's said in the meantime.

Rangel convicted of 11 ethics violations, complains that he didn't have legal counsel and wasn't in the room (after firing his lawyers and walking out of the room).

Yeah, but didn't they also find that he wasn't really trying to do anything illegal, just being bad at personal record keeping?

Some of the convictions were based on bookkeeping.  If you want to be generous, you could also say the tax evasion ones are also a bookkeeping issue.  But no, improperly soliciting lobbyists isn't really a bookkeeping issue.

Go ahead – run away
Say it was Horrible
Spread the word – tell a friend
Tell them the tale
Get a pic – do a blog
Heroes are over with
Look at him – not a word
Hammer, meet nail!

I'm sure he won't share a cell with a Bubba, but since this is Texas, maybe justice will see to it that it's a Bubba that gently slaps his wrist.

NYT: No Charges Recommended in Ted Stevens Case

Quote
WASHINGTON — A court-appointed investigator has found that the high-profile prosecution of the late Senator Ted Stevens was “permeated” by the prosecutors’ “serious, widespread and at times intentional” illegal concealment of evidence that would have helped Mr. Stevens defend himself at his 2008 trial, a federal judge disclosed on Monday.

But the 500-page report by the investigator, Henry F. Schuelke, recommends that none of the Justice Department officials involved in the case be prosecuted for criminal contempt of court because the judge who presided over the trial, Emmet G. Sullivan, of Federal District Court in Washington, did not issue an order specifically instructing prosecutors to obey the law by turning over any exculpatory evidence.

What a fucking disgrace.

I believe Stevens was guilty; I believe his ouster was deserved.  But the ends don't justify the means, and there's absolutely no excuse for deliberately witholding evidence.

3 Arrested as Part of Probe Into Walker Aides

Quote
Two people, including a former close aide to Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker when he served as Milwaukee County executive, were arrested on felony theft charges Thursday as part of an ongoing criminal investigation that centers on people who served in the county during Walker's tenure.

A third person, who worked six months for the state Department of Public Instruction until being fired Thursday, was charged with two counts of felony child enticement in a case the county prosecutor said was discovered while investigating the others.

Found a better topic for this stuff.

So the House passed the language that banned congressional insider training, but dropped the stuff that also banned the sale of congressional insider INFORMATION and instead added a bunch of stuff that regulates/legitimizes it.  Which I find kind of hopeful.

I mean yeah economically that's pure grade-A bullshit but it pretty much marks the end of the Age of Terror when people start talking about selling confidential information and the hicks don't immediately scream and run for their shotguns.  Now let's have a cheer for the Age of Disparity.

Yaaaaaay.

Walker misappropriates money to fix the budget he ruined. The first paragraph is a good summary of Walker's unique blend of bravado, incompetence, and unvarnished greed.

I can't blame him.  His blazing descent out of office is looking more and more like a sure thing at this point, so there's no practical reason not to just empty the till.

Gross.

And I assume illegal.

Just because he'll probably be recalled before he can be convicted of anything doesn't mean it would be a bad idea to get the ball rolling...
