The Ultimate Ladies' Man

You really kind of hope this is one of those "haha guys, I have the GREAT gag I always do for con photos... guys? guys?" situations as opposed that being a honest pose.

I've been seeing that picture around but Nagasaki wasn't really in the danger zone for the tsunami, so...

Yeah.

Yes, because a single arch surviving two separate events is waaay more impressive than two arches of similar design being the only things left standing after a destructive event.

Yes, because

there's a big "Nagasaki" label on both images up there?

Yes, because that.

(Also important because there's no standard of construction material for torii, so "What the hell is that thing made of?" is probably not going to give you a very interesting answer.)

If you even look at the arches, they're different.  Similar design, but not built the same.

The slightly different angles probably prevent you from noticing the slight differences at first, though there's no excuse for forgetting that Nagasaki was nowhere near the Tsunami impact areas - I know Nagasaki's in the south.

That said, Zara has a point that even if it's two different arches you still wonder what the hell they were made of.

The images are probably even more powerful to the Japanese, given that the closest (but not identical) western equivalent would be a pair of churches that remained standing in a field of devastation.

I wonder if it has less to do with the materials of construction and more the design of the structure. Both of those pictures also have a lot of trees, which suggests that the design is what is keeping it up more than the materials.

The last time I saw that link, it turned into an angry debate about internet bullying.  Because that's what that is.  Apparently.

I hate the internet.

To be fair, he did ask him to stop. But how could you possibly be offended at someone making you hold a bush baby?
