I actually based my buy vs. rent decision entirely on my dislike of apartment managers in general.

We didn't check out a single place where I didn't feel like the apartment manager seemed actually decent/likeable/reasonable and all the apartments were seedy.  And one smelled like pee.

How induction cooking works. I think this is awesome. We live in the future.

Induction cooking is pretty great, I gotta admit.

I learned a little bit about colorblindness today! Specifically that luminance matching is essential to exposing blindness!
It's not actually luminance-matched, so even RG color-blind people can read it.

I wonder if RG color-blind people tend to see more red or green... ... probably green.

I'm RG color blind, which is the most common kind of color blindness in males (something like 6%) but rare in females. (less than 1%) The best way to describe it is to say I'm "green weak".

Greens at dusk or dark greens look black to me. I had a jacket when I was younger that I thought was black for years, it wasn't until I casually mentioned I picked it out to be black on purpose in front of my friends that they all informed me it was actually a dark (but obviously) green, not black.

I see lighter greens as green and reds as reds. But if you mix them up it becomes hard for me to separate them, ala the shirt in that other thread, or RG colorblind charts.

Really, this "lost in the mix" effect probably has never affected my life at all. Seeing dark greens as black or green cars (or whatever) as black in low light is noticeable, though.

Anyway, I'm better at seeing camouflage than a normal person, so that's something.

I learned a whole lot more about fungii and single-celled organisms, but the real lesson was that I realized how badass nature can be.

Fungus gave us yeasts, yeasts gave us beer and bread, and beer and bread gave us civilization as we know it. Respect.

I learned Friday was color-blind, sort of.

That despite having no formal mathematical training, M.C. Escher is considered by mathematicians to have been a legitimate research mathematician thanks to his published paper Regular Division of the Plane with Asymmetric Congruent Polygons (and to a lesser extent, the later book The Regular Division of the Plane) and that he is also considered by mathematicians to be one of the founders of a mathematic sub-specialty now known as Crystallography.

Ah, much like how Jack Kirby had no formal art training yet is still recognized as one of the giants of comic illustration.

Well, only sort of. Escher was an artist who became recognised as a mathematician... thanks to his commentaries on his artwork.

It's just a little bit :scanners:. In a very cool way.

Hey for what it's worth Mongrel, Einstein and Feynman I know of the top of my head to have had most of their knowledge self-taught by the time they wrote their first paper.  I'm not even sure if the former had a real degree by the time he wrote his first paper.

Which is a little weird because she has her father's eyes, and by "her father's eyes" I mean "her father's soul-piercing stare".

Having said that, I can't wait for the porno remake of Event Horizon: "We wont need pants where we're going."
