Speaking of Kirby, I think I linked this story when it made the rounds in '07, but since Sims brings it up it bears repeating: Jack Kirby's Art Helped the CIA Rescue Diplomats in 1979.

Quote
Michael Parks, the guy who played the aviator-sporting sheriff in Kill Bill [has] been cast as Kirby in an upcoming movie directed by Ben Affleck about the whole affair.

That even though Panera possesses latte mugs and sells espresso drinks, it doesn't mean their employees have any idea how to make a latte.

Also, that Arby's is so happy that someone realized they might sell breakfast that they give you twice as much food as the other chains.

Quote
When I worked in education IT there was this big perception that with all the social networking and everything, that kids today 'know computers'. I had an uphill battle to convince them that they didn't know shit other than how to eventually end up at Facebook - they didn't know how to use anything except what was required to achieve that goal. I'd take classes where I'd tell them to open their web browser, get blank stares, and tell them to try to go to Facebook (which was blocked) and bam, end result was the same.

Even then, they were stupid. Half of them would Google 'facebook login' and click on the first result. When that article about facebook's login system was the no.1 result instead of facebook's login page, lots of confused people.

http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/facebook_wants_to_be_your_one_true_login.php

Go down to the comments, and sort by oldest first. It got so bad that they made a huge message in the middle of the news article in bold saying that the article is not actually facebook.

Edit: Oh god everyone is stupid.

I dunno, I'm with Thad. That does not quite ring true.

I have seen and heard some DUMB motherfuckers. This just isn't the right flavour of stupid. Especially the lines like "but it would have been nice to keep my job" or when he talks about the interview. Even the "crazy concepts" bit is laying it on a little too thick.

Smiler's quote, seems more believable though. May be true, may not be true, but that at least wouldn't surprise me.

When I worked help desk, one of the most common answers to the question "Which operating system do you have?" was "Dell".

The cup holder story is likely bullshit.  Not because users aren't that stupid, but because CD trays aren't that breakable.

Saw a site some years back ('04ish?) where somebody got sick of hearing the story and decided to test it out.  He successfully stacked multiple bricks on his CD tray without breaking it.

As for people not knowing what a browser is, or the distinction between the Web and the Internet, that one's on Microsoft.

That in a recession, sales of laxatives go up.

It probably has more to do with the fact that stress activates the sympathetic nervous system, and that slows down your digestive tract. Slow it down enough and you get constipation.

That even if you have your rights written down on your contract, you will need to do some serious arguing to get them. And then you run the risk of being too visible for the next downsizing.

Your rights only matter to your boss when your employer is looking to screw you, and when you're leaving the company. The rest of the time they're pretty much guaranteed to ignore them.

It's such a huge drop down. my parents want to know if I am getting health insurance when I have to put pressure on the boss just to get -paid-.

In 8-10 years of active professional life, I've held eight jobs, four of them in a period of two years. I've never had a raise. I've had paid vacation time maybe twice. Every single non-government job I've had has delayed my salary for more than two weeks, at least once. I need a private retirement fund because I don't think I'll ever be able to prove I've worked 35 years.

Each step up comes with a new load. I pay taxes to three countries. The immigration department has enough paperwork on me and my wife to build a house, just so she can get a job selling clothes here.

And, of course, this is all because I'm doing things -right-. I know a lot of you guys don't have these problems because you don't have a job.

I have no idea what my parents could have told me to prepare me for this that wouldn't have made me go to a commune right there and then.

MY parents needed me to turn around and tell THEM what I figured out.

It didn't take.
