Whenever I would look up Genesis songs on Youtube or whatever the auto-search would bring up something called Rodriguez. I hadn't dug into their discography very much, so I just assumed they released some song called Rodriguez. Until today, that is, when I thought to actually look it up. Turns out she's an actress.

Portugal and the U.K. signed a treaty of friendship and alliance in 1373 that is still active.

Today I discovered, inside the Houston Galleria, on the third floor next to the Nemen Marcus, a place called "Pepper Palace", where they sell various hot sauces and salsas. They also sell lollipops with actual scorpions in them.

I regret not buying one.

In 1859, Arkansas passed a law making it illegal to be free and black.  The punishment for violating this law was to be sold into slavery.

Not something I've learned today, but a general bit of wisdom I've picked up: Never suggest to a service representative (manager, repairman, whatever) how you would like an issue resolved.  Just tell them the issue and let them do whatever they're going to do.  Human instinct tends to lean toward resistance to any demand or request, no matter how polite or reasonable, and toward overcompensation in the absence of any other suggestion, simply to make the perceived problem go away.

The problem with that is when you get tier 1 support for your cable/internet provider and they give you sweet, sweet tips like "Check to see if everything is plugged in" when you ask them to please send someone over to fix the piece of shit rat's nest the endless procession of technicians keep adding to whenever your service goes out. Every fucking time it's "Oh I don't know what the last guy did, but I fixed up all the wiring so it isn't such a mess anymore." I'm afraid to switch to another company because I'm afraid that somewhere down the line someone installed Shodan into my house's wiring or some shit and she will be unleashed if I ever try to undo anything AT&T has done over the years.

In my experience "Pray nobody fucks thing up even worse" is the primary operating principle when dealing with any sort of telecom provider.

I have Dishnetwork tv mostly for my mom. When charter put in my cable internet service the straight up cut the dish cable from the back of my dish that was wired into my room, wired that into my cable access point to give me internet, and left a cut cable sticking out of my dish. I never watch tv and mom's tv receiver is on another cable so it took me like three months to figure this out.

For the past couple years I've been perfectly happy with my computer desk, save for the fact that I really, really wished the keyboard tray came out more.  I had to type pretty much under the desk all the time.

Today I got a little tired of it and decided to just YANK on the thing out of, I dunno, spite.

Turns out it had only been a little stuck.

My grandmother hated my mother's first boyfriend, so she threatened him into disappearing (somehow) and told her that he had got his head crushed in a freak industrial accident, so she wouldn't try to look for him. My mom only learned yesterday that he has been alive all this time, by looking him up on Facebook on a whim.

So, another reason in the "don't want to see that part of the family again" pile!

edit: seriously who does that

jesus christ

The term Yankee was actually derived from combining the two Dutch names Jan and Kees, when the New York area was still called Nieuw Amsterdam.

Apparently it was a derogative around New England for the Dutch colonists, who all seemed to called Jan or Kees.
