So Sarah Palin is having a sold out convention in Redding soon. (About an hour and a half away from me, about two and half from Sacramento) My local news had a bit about it, including interviews with lots of people who want her to run for President in 2012.

Apparently, she was only scheduled for one speech at the hall, but tickets sold out so quickly that they decided to do another the next night due to demand.

So, Norondor! This is your chance to see Sarah Palin! I bet you don't want to miss it

Also, the same news program had a story about how an 8 year old girl was beaten to death by her adoptive parents for failing to answer a spelling question correctly in her home schooling! Topical!

Today I learned that there is in fact such a thing used in medicine known as the 'Penis Clamp'.

Color me terrified.

Nearsightedness is actually an advantage for people who do desk/computer work.  Since your close-range vision is actually stronger, you end up being able to get away without reading glasses when you get older and your vision drops across the board (of course you also start driving like Mr. Magoo but whatever).  So unless you're myopic to the point of being nonfunctional without lenses on, you're doing yourself a huge disservice if you get laser surgery to correct your focus range.

My focal range is less than an inch from my eyes.  ::(:

I learned a few days ago that there are trucks that run on propane rather than gas or diesel.  Soooo strange.

All the buses in Atlanta do. "We can't run on time, reliably, or safely, but at least we don't pollute!"

Well, I think Hank Hill is lame on the grounds that he likes propane.  I don't like propane and I hate filling propane tanks, and propane smells terrible because of the smell they add to the gas and god damn it is just awful and it burned my hand.

Right, basically if you're more than, say, -4, you should probably get that shit fixed.

I just find it further interesting that the implication here is that myopia isn't really a disease so much as a natural adaptation to consequences which necessitate being able to see better close-up.  So you see so many nerds with glasses and think "Okay well I guess most smart people have crappy eyesight" when in reality we all have great eyesight and just need it adjusted when we're driving or something.  People with 20/20 probably can't make out as many tiny details overall as nearsighted people can either, although I don't really have any evidence to back that up.

It all makes me wonder if I shouldn't even be wearing contacts, but in the end I really just don't like dealing with glasses all the time.

EDIT: Though all that being said, my eyesight has shifted from -2.5 to -1.75 in the last couple years, and I can't see my computer screen very well without lenses of some sort.  So God knows what the fuck's actually going on with mine.

 :perfect:

Yeah, I found out a while back LAZER EYEZ is not possible on me, or, more accurately won't do much for me. That's okay though, I actually prefer my glasses for some reason.

Also, the reason my eyes are like this is not because of some SMART PEEPOPL EVOLUSHINARY DADAPTASHUN, but because I was born two months prematurely back when regularly saving kids who were that premature was still pretty novel. At the time, they didn't know that you have to cover kids eyes when they're that young or else... they have happen to them what happened to me.

Yeah it sounds like you have just plain bad eyesight.  Not a lot you can do about that except stick a couple of magnifying lenses on yourself.

:deal:

Er, no, wait, I mean

...there's really no emote here for sympathy.  Go figure.  I guess I'll just use something vaguely topical.

My vision is better than 20/20, and I am fantastic at reading shit close up and far away.

Once again, my single piece of anecdotal evidence blows away your pure conjecture.

Fair enough!  Although when I said "fine details" I meant more like tiny hairs or the fine grain of parchment, not just text.

People who look through microscopes the most generally wear the largest glasses, surprise surprise.

(Or not, as Google Image reveals.  Though how many of those people have corrected vision is unknown.)

My current prescription is -4.5 and -5.25, but that's a little less powerful than what it actually should be.  My optometrist lets me keep that prescription since I mostly work with and do hobbies with things up close like computers and books and cross stitching.  If I wanted to have perfect distant vision I'd have to go up to a 6 or more.
